    V8 misfire i think

    Hi there

I have had a 92 discover v8 for over a year now and it has been great apart from me doing the clutch obviously.

But now the car has some strange goings on.

It seems to have some sort of misfire i think. You can drive it all week and it wont be a problem but then you can just be pottering down the street and it seems to miss and sometimes it will die and come to a halt while other times it will recover and carry on.

When it does dies sometime it will start straight away while other times you need to leave it a few minutes and then try and it will start fine again.

It has had a service including fuel filter and it is still the same. Apart from this it is going great.

Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated as i am getting ear ache from home as it is her daily drive.

    Thank you Nick

It has never happened to me, but sounds like the ignition amplifier is dying.

They are affected by heat, so next time pour some cold water on it . It is on the side of the distributor.

    Earth straps!

Pull 'em all off, clean and replace.

    Possibly!

i replaced my disy with a scorcher from preformance ignition in melbourne they are machined in australia from billet and have australian bosch parts. the modulator is internal as aposted to a remote modulator found in the stock d1 behind the headlight. if you can recreate the problem use a timing light on each wire to check for active spark, eg the timing light will strobe on what ever lead has a spark. if you have no signal or no signal on one or more cylinder you have your answer.

good luck , let us know how you go.

ps if we wanted to save fuel we wouldent drive a disco

It hasn't happened to me either, but I'd have to go with Philip A on this one.
Surely they can't be too expensive to replace a a first port of call.

I agree...I've had this happen to me recently.
The amplifier is located in one of two places depending on your model.
It's either on the side of the dizzy or underneath a mounting plate secured to the coil.
Be sure to apply heat sink compound to the under side of the amp when you refit it or it won't disipate heat build up.

    Regards.

    Thats the one!

I've had a recent problem with intermitant mis-firing. It turned out to be the plug that pushes onto the top of one of the injectors was faulty...very easy fix.
Check ALL connections before buying any new parts!
