No idea if it would be beneficial or not, but coincidentally Phoenix was looking into a car that had a water/air intercooler fitted: Help Phoenix buy a discovery!![]()
G'day,
Was thinking about doing this for a while but dont know if it will be worth doing it if it dosent help. i was going to connect 2 extra hoses from the washer jets and have them near the intercooler so you can spray it down in hot weather or when out 4wdriven. either going to use existing switch inside which means i'll always wash my windscreen or put another switch just for the jet near the cooler. have heard stories of it working and stories that say it dosent make a real difference, has one here done something on the lines of this???
cheers simo

yeah like i said i have heared mixed stories..i saw that pic he had with the water/air cooler and geezz that looks messy as!!!!! the way i'm doing it is very simple just with some washer jets, i have seem them in the jap cars and they say it does help.
I suspect the benefits wouldn't necessarily be great. I can say from experience (and 4 turbo inter-cooled land rovers) that they perform a lot better in colder weather than in hotter weather. So cooling the air, increase the density, more oxygen is all good, but will a water spray be sufficient... don't know
I think if it has a chance to work it would be better to have a larger intercooler in the D1 to start with.

I am looking at getting a bigger intercooler for the D1 for about $550 if i recall and then was going to give it a burl to see if there is any difference but as you said it wouldnt be a huge difference made cause im only guessing with so little water spray coming from the jets.
Its a common conversion with hotted up WRX cars.Spray onto intercooler 1 bottle to a fuel tank full. A falcon washer bottle for the washers.
Hotted up cars like the Rex or Skylines usually use them when on full boost. It helps to keep the intake temperature down.I dont think it will really make much difference on a 300 Tdi.Unless your on full boost alot at the Otways![]()
When I had my Mercedes diesel, water injection was very popular. Most systems sprayed water straight down the inlet manifold throat. I was always skeptical myself on account of going overboard and locking the thing
waer injection and spray onto the intercooler are a little different I think.

I've your going to do it you need to do it properly otherwise you wont get the full benefit. A high pressure pump and some decent nozzles and a 50/50 mix of water and methanol will give you the greatest cooling effect.
IMHO a pressure switch rigged up to set the sparys off once you reach max boost pressure is the way to go. You would be able to run a higher max boost pressure and keep your intake (and thusly egts) down in an acceptable range.
Water to air intercooler kick arrss but they are a lot of work to set up.
