has the fuel rail been properly bled?
Hi all,
I've been having probs with my Discovery ES 3.8 V8.
Without warning the fuel pump died.
I tracked a pump from the UK and got the local mechanic to fit it.
Thinking pretty much it was a swap, issues arose.
Firstly, no power was getting to the pump and the mech traced the problem.
Now the pump has power the disco kicks over but won't idle. Are there any other 'tricks' or other sequences which must be done in order for it to work?
At a loss here, all help is appreciated.
Cheers,
Jackdad

hi,
don't even know how that works or where to start........
righto....
turn the ignition on and you should hear the pump fire up run for several seconds and then turn off.
turn the ignition off and back on again and the pump should cycle.
do that one more time.
that should have the fuel rail primed. to start hold a half throttle position and turn the key to start.
if that doesnt work then theres other issues, potentiall the pumps wired up backwards, the pump is sending areated fuel to the engine the filters clogged....
you could even have fluked a dodgey ignition barrel.

thanks for that info.
I'll give it a go tomorrow.

Your problem is that you have lost 150CC from the engine. LOLI tracked a pump from the UK and got the local mechanic to fit it.
Seriously though , if it is a 3.9 Disco 1 , a VR Commodore pump is exactly the same ( except has two large blade connectors rather than 1 big /one small) and available locally for about $30 up for Chinese. I have a Brazilian Bosch pump in my 92 RRC 3.9.( or should I say 3950CC) which cost about $105 from Repco.
So if it is a bad pump then you do not have to go through the same again.
I would think that the mechanic should be tasked to fix it. It is not rocket science. If the pump is wired correctly, has power from the relay and there are no leaks in the hose above then it should go. It is a bit of a wrestle to get the internal hose off and on so he may have damaged it.
Then it could be something completely different as detailed by blknight.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I'm also having problems with my fuel pump(I think).
The car(91, 3.5 V8)runs fine on LPG, but is starving for fuel on petrol, and I don't think I can hear the fuel pump, when I turn the key on.
This happened once before, not too long ago, but after going down a 10km hill engine breaking on petrol, it cleared it, and I put an injector cleaner through it, now two tanks later, the problem is back.
Is there a fuse somewhere, I couldn't find it.
Is there any way to check the fuel tank filter(gauze)or clean it?
I have a new fuel filter, and this also could have been the start of my problems, as the problem came the first time, not long after it was installed.
