replace the ignition amp module, and if symptoms persist replace the fuel pump.

Howdy folk's
I refuse to be beaten by this Disco, I can be driving along, everything is great, (sometimes I can do 30klms, next day I can't do 2klms!) then it dies... like it's out of fuel, I investigated all of the usual problem's, replaced the fuel pump, plug's, lead's, dizzy cap, coil(all LUCAS)....... Im now suspicious of the crank angle sensor, more mystified by it's location though!
After reading all the good advice on here, I tested my MAF, it had low voltage, pulled it apart, cleaned it up and have adjusted it and the TPS to correct voltage's.... even bought a new MAF, because when it would stall, I would jump out, rip the MAF plug off and roar down the road in a trail of black smoke(fuel).... which is kind of a fix, until it smells a petrol station and needs another 85lt drink for around the 140klms!
The plugs were sooty, lead's were ok, 1 had high resistance(replaced all), I have run extra earth straps everywhere!..... this ECU plug, how the hell do I get it out without a hammer?(oil in harness)....... I tend to think this issue is Electrical, but Im going to put a new fuel filter in tomorrow, just to be sure and continue to chase this drama.
Is there an option to get the error codes of the ECU with a multi meter or test light?........ I will also replace the module..... unless someone can point me in the direction of testing procedure's for all these sensor's... I have had a test light on relay's(both footwells) to confirm that they are not switching off.... (all wiring was cleaned with contact cleaner)...... still no luck! I have searched for broken wire's in looms, in, out, under and above!
So with the MAF plug OFF it will run, but drink like a sailor on shore release for a night, if the MAF is plugged in, it's normally drive's to the most dangerous spot, then die's.
It's an early 94 pre update 3.9 5spd, with the usual Lucas "Prince of Darkness" issue's........... Any hint's, tip's, flammable liquid's that you think may help?
Thank's a heap......... my fingers are crossed
replace the ignition amp module, and if symptoms persist replace the fuel pump.

The fuel pump is new... maybe two week's old, pressure is fine, is there a way to test this ignition module that anyone is aware of?
hahaha, no wonder I couldn't find the CAS!.....
ignition module for sure if pump is a newby....
not much to em but when the decide they have had enough...
imho

disconnecting the MAF won't fix the issue with the Ignition module. There is a procedure in the Haynes manual to test the Ig module, but I'm not so sure it is a be all end all test. I diagnosed the fault with the test, but after replacing the module, the test was still saying the module was stuffed - have done another 15000 kays on it no dramas. On the bright side though, if you change it and it isn't stuffed then it's better than when it packs in on a 40 degree day.
You might find as soon as you disconnect the MAF, then the module has cooled down a little and happy to get along. You will find however that one day it wont. Mine stopped me in peak hour trafficand it didn't start for another 6 hours.
Anyway, next time it stops, just sit for 5 and try to fire up again. If disconnecting the MAF is the only thing that sorts it, then methinks your computer is having dramas.
Oil in the harness of the old V8 is not an issue as the wiring is on the outside of the engine - indirect injection, whereas the TD5 has wiring inside the valve cover as the injectors go straight into the head.
You 3.9 does not have a crank angle sensor so don't go looking for it.

i had mine sealed up tight and when it stopped...usually in traffic, ide get out and dump a bottle of water on it and off i went
after that i bought a new one and remote mounted it on the inner guard, no issues after that.
cheers phil
Ok, have done the fuel filter, about to change the module.... finger's are crossed, how do I remotely mount this module from the Dizzy? is there a kit to buy......... (Land Rover=Money Pit)
Big shout out to you guy's for all this help, I and many other's would be lost without the help on here..... or held to ransom by a Rover stealer
Ok, just thought i would put up a progress report............ I have replaced the fuel filter, took it for a drive, no issue!........... WooooHooooo.........
Then as I turned on my headlights, some relay's on the driver's side kick panel went crazy and I stopped! on the Gateway bridge(sorry if you were caught in traffic due to me)
I rolled down the hill, pulled everything apart.... again, two yellow relay's were hot to touch, I made it look like I knew what I was doing, wiggled the plug's... dash lights returned, but would not operate the starter.
After a few attempt's, its running, I turn on the h/lights and it dies, sweet drive home on parker's
the charge rate is good, alternator is new, as is the battery, So what are these pesky relay's......... could be the source of all my problem's..... after replacing everything else, I have downloaded the RAVE manual, but I have a mac and its not happy with windows formatted stuff, but if any one knows what these yellow relays are id be keen to hear
Drivers footwell,
2 yellow relays very bottom row, closest to the firewall is the "ignition load relay",
this one died on me and i lost the blower/fan, aircon & air-recirc
the one next to it in the middle is the starter motor relay.
After all this, it turn's out it was a bad relay!, a few of them up under the dash behind the fuse box looked affected by heat, I replaced everyone I could find!............... hasn't missed a beat!
So after all of this frustration, the end may be in sight........ let's hope
Thank you to all for the help in finding this problem........ now its the solution for someone else as well Im sure.
Hopefully we get some rain in Brissy tomorrow,
so I can have a go at low range and actually get it dirty! (if it runs in the rain!)... lol
