Smile I have a Safari Snorkel, now I need axle breathers.... Help please!

    Evening all,

Santa brought me a Safari Snorkel which I will be fitting when it stops ruddy snowing. While I'm there I'll be fitting breathers.

Now I won't be spending £60 or so on a proper kit so I shall build one (I reckon it can be done for £10-15). I have a 300tdi manual and I've heard conflicting stories on what is required....

    • I know that the axles need breathers which makes two. Also the gearbox and crankcase I think. Any more? (a friend mentioned 5 in total.....)

Any help would be great. I have searched the forum and had no luck so far.....

    Thanks

    urmmmm...

you should already have raised breathers on the D1 the front diff gearbox and Tcase should all terminate at the firewall somewhere between the middle and the right side of the engine as you look at it from the front.

the rear one should run up the Aframe and be snapped off near the chasssis pivot somewhere but will head up to the same place Or if its been repaired up into the body somewhere.

All you should need is some 3mm joiners and oil safe tubing (aquarium hose works fine if you dont get it hot). While your at it once you've found them all and have them heading to the same place its worth while fitting one of those cheap fuel filters and joining them all together and putting them onto that.

For the cape trip I went to the effort of getting my hands on one of those 12v mattress pumps and plumbing that up so that up to pressureise the drive line they only make 1-2PSI and arent positive displacement so wont blow anything apart and will let the driveline breath normally when not running.

you dont need it for the crank case but you can go nuts and do all sorts of parts

startermotor, bell housing, swivel housings, dizzy, winch motors and gearboxes wiper motors, fresh air blower motor.

Personally the best setup I think I've seen used the bell housing as the distribution manifold a small blower pump fed the bell housing with air from the filtered side of the filter box and from there all parts had a dedicated line from down near the gearbox side of the bellhousing and the wading plug was left out of the box.

For my d1 i removed the existing extended breathers that only run up to the floor/firewall, and got hold of some irrigation hose (only very narrow stuff like 3 or 4mm) it fits nicely over the breather fitting on top of the housing.
I ran the rear breather up the a-frame arm then ccross onto the left hand chassis rail and met the front breather at the left hand radious arm and put a 3way joiner in so both diffs could run off the one fuel filter mounted up high in the engine bay.

With the g'box and transfer case i did the same thing joined both breathers onto the one line then ran them to a filter mounted under the consol in the cab

    Only cost me about $15

Agree, breathers already there.. just need to extend them if you want. I bought some rubber hosing from an Auto shop and extended them to run further up the firewall.

    Great, thanks guys.

Best I get underneath and have a look at what's there . I remember there being breather pipes on the axles when I fitted the diff guards so I'll look at extending those along with the others. Beats doing more work than needed.

I'll take some pics and do a how-to. (when I get around to it)

    Exclamation

    Right then.

I bought some 6mm pipe and a bunch of 1/8bsp push fit elbows which fit the axles lovely, sorted.

I also got some 8mm pipe and a neat connector manifold thingy that will enable me to run four 6mm pipes into the maifold and have a single 8mm pipe to run up the outside of the snorkel.

However it appears that the timing cover and gearbox plug holes are a different size . They appear to be 1/4bsp, any definate ideas?
