Discovery's lifting in the front end off-road??

    Hey all
For a while now i have wondered why disco's seem to lift the front wheels often on steep up hill climbs.

I have spoken to others that have noticed the same thing, although half the time it is probably the driver's line that causes the front end to lift but i have seen rangies and county's taking the same lines without lifting the wheels.

As far as i know rangies have pretty much the same suspension and chassis set up as d1's but just don't seem to ride like d1's.

I'm running suspension stuff's 3'' flexy coils at the moment (actually measure's 4-5'' lift) and they ride fine on road, gravel and on smooth hills, but on all the un-even hills i've attempted the front wheels are alway's in the air at some stage.

Last weekend we went out for a drive, the first hill was a very steep un-even steep climb with several rock steps spread out all the way up.
The track wound it's way up through the tree's on a VERY skinny ridge which made it a bit scary. eventually with abit of trouble i made it to the last ledge, i got the front wheels over but as soon as the rears hit the base of the ledge up went the front right hand wheel, i kept on the throttle and it came back down but as soon as the other side rear hit a step, up went the other side and there was no more forward movement.

because the ridge is so skinny there is only one line so we couldn't blame it on the driver
About a month ago we took the GCLRO up the same track (disco's, rangies and defer's) and not one of them had any troubles, know wheel lifting or anything so at this stage i'm putting it down the rear suspension being to soft and somehow causing the front wheels to lift up.
I'll admit that all the rovers that drove it the other month were twin locked (i've only got a rear locker) but i can't see how a front locker in going to prevent wheel lift.

Dad drove it in the county with full tyre pressures and only a rear locker on the weekend before and had know troubles at all, obviously with the longer wheels base and the lump of isuzu up front would have helped alot though.

So what do others think about disco's lifting the front end, is it just me or have others noticed the same thing?

Hi tim, the Cof G is higher, but I have often wondered if its because the Discos have heaps of compression travel in the rear.

    no they do it alright.

your missing 10 inches from the wheel base of a shed on wheels

with all the lifting youve done the COG has gone up as well. all of which puts you closer and closer to front end lift.

Rangies have the hydromat which keeps the rear end higher than in a Disco. It acts as a damper, spring and bumpstop.

    Thanks guy's!
That answers all my Q's, looks like i'm up for a suspension change anyway, the flexy coils are to tall for what i need
