is the cap holding full pressure?
Hi all,
I have an interesting issue, when the cooling system is pressurised I can smell hot coolant whilst driving, when I release pressure off the expansion tank and drive there is no tell tale coolant smell. I have checked under the carpets for the heater matrix leak, none.
As I can smell coolant whilst driving I am assuming that it is an external leak?
I had to top up 4ltrs of coolant recently, since then I have watched the issue closely.
I have checked all hoses and tightened hose clamps, I have checked the welsh plugs on the exhaust side of motor, is there a welsh plug or plug on the back of the Cylinder head or Motor Block?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.![]()

Is it supposed to hold pressure? or is it supposed to let go at a certain PSI?
correctish 14psi is how I rememeber it but if its not holding above about 9 psi then your coolant is slowly but surely boiling off.

Oh well, what do I say? I love the old girl, she has been faithful.
Hopefully pick her up tomorrow from TRS here in Adelaide, I am also having the Radiator rodded and flushed as well, I have all my work done there and they have been great, I have owned the vehicle since 2000, she works hard towing my 1.5 ton boat around, we have towed the boat over 5000klm, the landy has done well.
Thanks for your replies,

I had the expansion chamber/filler tank split and was slowly leaking away coolant. Bought a replacement tank for $100 as I was in a hurry and didn't shop around and had the new one installed in about 45min. I don't have much of a mechanic background but was easy to do. Just needed to drill out the hole for mounting the non-genuine part, so if you're going to do this it's worth checking the mounting before hooking up the hoses.

HI All
Before I moved to Wagga I visited RoverTech in Brisbane for a service and the mechanic noticed a crack on the seam of the expansion tank and told me that it is a common fault with the expansion tanks. I replaced the tank with a Rover tank (about $68 I think) and the two plastic plugs with brass plugs, one in the motor the other at the top of the radiator.
The TDI motor is a great motor but you can't take the risk!
