    93 Disco Roof damage

I have just had a branch drop on my roof putting a dent across the roof curve to windscreen intersection, smashed the windscreen. I need to get to the roof from the inside I would think to address the metalwork. The driver side top of the door front corner has closed about 3 - 4mm. So I expect it will have to be porta powered out?

Couple of questions: 1/ how do I get the roof liner out without damage & 2/ I'm open to good suggestions.

I have had the Disco since new, It's immaculate inside & out, just put a brand new 4.6 engine then crunch!

I thank you in advance. Barry

    Do you have it insured?

If not, maybe obtain a donor car for the roof panel / windscreen.
Strip the car down yourself, get a panel beater to repair/replace the damaged parts then do the reassembly yourself.

Is there something stopping the headlining from coming out the usual way?

    93 roof damage

Gi Day Scott, no it wasn't insured as I had it off the road doing mods over the winter! The roof liner is the stiff shell type, just not too sure where to start.
Is replacing the roof a big job? It certainly would be for me I think? Windscreens aren't too dear, so thats not a big concern. The damage isn't catastrophic by any means, however, I expect that it will need access from the inside and the application of heat.

I will look further into your good suggestions, .. I hadn't thought about cutting the roof off and replacing it?

    Thanks again Scott.

    93 roof damage 2

    GiDay again Scott.
You said: "Is there something stopping the headlining from coming out the usual way? I guess the question I should have asked is" whats the usual way?" As I mentioned, I'm a bit reluctant to just start removing everything around it till it comes out, ..... done this before, ... then usually someone says: "Aw ya just have to take that bit off and out it comes"!

If you could point me in the right direction Scott, ... that would be great.

    Thanks in advance, ... Baz

To take the roof lining off, take the grab handles off, roof lights out, rear seatbelt mounts off and unscrew the roof console and sunvisors. There are also some plugs at the back to lever out.

The roof structure should be similar to this ( My 94 Disco)

The usual way is how Langy has described - I didn't know if the roof damage (around roof console & visors) had affected the removal process at all.

Thank you very much. I thought that would be the process. I had made up a tool to remove the rear panels some years back, so, I'm off to a good start for early next week.

I also forgot to mention, my disco is a 2 door, however, I'm certain the roof will be the same. At worst there may be minor changes, ... it shouldn't affect the process.

    Thanks again Baz

Thanks again Scott, .... the roof distortion isn't all that bad. When I get the new windscreen & place it in the frame, I don't expect any more than 10 - 15mm of push-in.

Langy has made it very clear & I will take your advice & get a panel beater to do the structural work and I'll do the rest.

    Great advice, ..... Baz

At least get a decent panel beater to look at the damage & see what he thinks before doing any cutting.

You could always do the old hail damage repair trick from the 70s - cover the roof in vinyl .

Thats what I'm going to do Scott. Once I get the interior out, I'm sure a competent panel beater won't have too much of a challenge.

Having asked questions, ... got very understandabe answers, .... only a fool would do otherwise..

I will post the pic's of the progress.

    Thanks again Scott. ....... Baz
