Exclamation 93 Disco makin' some strange noises....

A little noise has developed in my 93 3.9 v8 this morning, and it has me worried.

    It has just clocked 160,000.

Here is some background of todays events to eliminate questions/guess work.

What happens, first of all, driving to work this morning in 5th gear, I accelerated from 70 to 80km/h. At 80 I got a fairly strong vibrating in the car. Felt it through the steering wheel, pedals, and my bum. I thought "Flat front" so I got off the throttle, and the vibrating stopped.
Applied throttle, vibrations came back. Off throttle, gone.

    I did the following.....

    1) Varied speed in 5th gear
    2) Repeated the above in 4th and 3rd gear to see if it was RPM enduced
    3) Put it in diff lock high, and tried all of the above, then took out of diff lock.

Vibration still there at 80+. Stopped at a set of lights, and got back to 80 this time, no vibrating.

I drove the 47kms home from work, and it only vibrated once, this time it started at 70km/h.

I had a look/play under the car, couldnt see anything obvious, so went to sit infront of the aircon.

Went for a bit of a drive, and on a dirt road I got a...
"clang ka clang ka clang clang clang clang" noise from what sounded like the gearbox/transfer case area. After a few seconds the noise stopped, and I drove gingerly home with no noise, and parked the car. I promptly checked my bank balance and fear it will be reading $0.05 by the end of the week.

Sooooo, anyone have any ideas as to where I should look, what to hit tap feel twist pull?
Any one had something similar, and how poor will I be as a result?

    Many thanks.

-Joel- and his otherwise greatly reliable Disco (ignoring oil and electricity leaks )

New fronts 10,000kms ago, and all are well (checked for play whist I had the car up last weekend. Will check rears tomorrow.

Is it normal to have some rotational movement left and right in your front prop shaft, but not the rear?

    Movement it about 7mm.

It may not be your bearings only reason I said was I had a similar noise that sounded like the gearbox.. I had no play in the wheels either just lots of intermittent clangs and crunches that got worse over the course of 3 days..took the wheel off etc and the bearing had **** it's self and seized on to the stub axle. My bearings were not old and greased often, but with out realizing I got water ingress due to a split end cap.
I guess all I'm saying is just give them a quick check and grease easy, fix if it is, just maintanace if it's not.

Sounds like you got a but of play in your front diff with your prop. I have a fair bit of play in mine can feel it from first back to reverse, on take up. I have an auto though.

    Problem solved!

Well me and a mate had a good look at the wagon today, and after a quick drive, we jumped underneath to have a look, and i grabbed my front drive shaft and burnt my hand.

A quick trip to Land Vehicle spares (as they are around the corner) to diagnose the prob, we pulled out the drive shaft, gave it to George, and came back an hour later.

Drove it around for a while, with a very hard drive to the firestation for a callout and all was quiet and well. Driveshaft is as cool as a cucumber.

    Thanks Dullbird for the advice!

Oh and get some new end caps before it does become a problem I bought some heavy duty ones that look like the maxi drive flanges does the job good for 140bux means you can run them oil fed to it you want..

Cost me $130, and its fixed.

That makes me HAPPY! Yeah iI will have a look at the end caps. Im going 4x4 at Zig Zag tomorrow, so I will pull the caps, and fill em with grease to be sure water isnt getting in.

that sounds like front propshaft to me....

if you need to in a pinch you can get by with the broken caps by placing a balloon or condom over the hub then pushing the cap back on.
