Look in "The Good Oil" section for some tutorials on this subject and if it is that loose I would attend to it sooner rather than later, Regards Frank.
I recently changed a front tyre and noticed there was some play in the hub. So I took it off and put in a new wheel bearing, which was due to be replaced soon anyway.
However the play is still apparent and seems to be at the swivel/cv iinterface. If I rock the hub up and down a small trickle of oil comes out from behind the swivel.
I assume this is caused by play in the swivel bearings, and that they need to be replaced and shimmed to the correct spec to eliminate any pUBlay in the hub? A job I have not done before but seems pretty straightforward.

sounds about right to me...
be warey if you have to replace the bearings, pressing the races out of the ball has known to cause breakages if not done correctly. I advise lining up a spare set of balls with no races in them or with a preinstalled matched race and bearing set prior to undertaking the task.

Traco,
Don't tell me you are driving it around like that??If that amount of play is evident and oil leaks out when you move the swivel housing, then the lower bearing has already collapsed
Has your D1 got ABS?

I just belt/tap mine out with a steel drift. They are usually not that tight ie I do not think they have that much of an interference fit. Where could it break as it is humungous steel casting. An apprentice would really have to try hard.
I belt /tap new ones in with a brass drift until they "ring true" using the old cone as a drift for some/most of the way. I rest the swivel on a lump of softwood.
I Fondly recall I chased a shimmy in my car for years, finally looking at the RH swivel which didn't leak, and some ahem "British craftsman" had not seated the top cone properly from new and it was Askew.

when you get one that been flogged and its peened the race into the ball tapping them with a drift is a good recipe for a mushroomed and bent drift.
this is one of those doesnt happen often but its happened cases.

No it's not being driven and it doesn't have ABS. And last time I checked it a few months when I changed the oil in the swivels everything was ok. I guess after 14 years of hard use these things are bound to manifest themselves.
