    Black bonnets

    Hi folks.

I remember some of you painted your bonnets matt black.
My bonnet needs painting and I thought that might be the go.

So if you have any pics, links or tips then post them up.

    Thanks.

I did my RRC over 12 months ago.

I used a power sander to key the original paint.

I taped the sides where I wanted the paint to finish with ordinary sticky tape and newspaper.

I used satin black spray cans (x2) to do a couple of coats.

It has lasted well, I haven't seen any reason to touch it up yet.

I just masked mine off.....sanded it backs by hand with a block, and then sprayed with a paint gun and compressor....mine was the wrong paint as it had a shine to it once dry (like a satin) but it soon went matt black with the sun.... mine actually needs doing again. as it has marks over it that I can get off...

If looking for easy way out (decal), try
LAND ROVER PARTS - DECAL HOOD BLACKOUT KIT DISCOVERY II

The above is for Disco II, but they do Disco I as well. Have spoken to a couple of local sign-writers, and they have all quoted significantly more.

Dullbird, you went all out. I didn't even take my bonnet off . Did it late one afternoon in the driveway. Pushed it into the shed and lowered the roller door onto the windscreen when the wind picked up.

So you guys just blacked out the centre?
I want to do the whole thing. Mine isn't because I have roof mounted spotties (I don't) but because the clear coat on mine is all crazed and getting worse by the week.
I figured matt (or satin) black would look better than trying to colour match the bonnet with a home job.

The roof is going the same way but is only in the initial stages at the moment. It'll be getting sprayed white though.

Hey DB where did you get that bonnet sticker from? Looks like it has depth. Is it a D3 sticker?
Mine will need replacing after the respray. It is all faded now anyway.

unless you get a really good painter, they look ****.
it will cost you the same to have it resprayed the original colour as flat blacking it.
and the gloss finish is also cleanable, keeps its colour and finish for many years.
if all you can afford is pressure pack flat black, then expect to repaint it every year, flat black fades out really fast. and picks up water marks really quickly, which don't polish out [duh- polishing flat black defeats the purpose]

i love the reflection i can see in my bonnet, and being a disco, have never had reflection off the bonnet be a nusiance when driving.
see a couple of paint shops, it isn't that expensive to get it repainted, and while they are at it, they can shoot paint over some other bits as well.

Money isn't the issue as such. However I don't see the point in blowing it on this Disco getting the bonnet painted professionally. I did like the shine it once had but those days are gone.
If it was done professionally it would stand out just as much as doing it at home. It still wouldn't match the rest of the car.
