Could just be poor tensioning of the new belt, allowing a slip.

Just changing the belt is only half the job. Tensioner and idler need to be done at the same time, NO EXCEPTIONS in my opinion.
If either of these have bearing failures and sieze, they will quickly destroy the belt.
Don't cut corners with diesel timing belts.

Just got the UPDATE:
Belt has slipped off pulley and rubbed against case. Not sure of complete details yet, but will update.
I agree with you JC should always have complete kit done. I believe just the belt every second time, and full kit every other time at 60000km intervals.
Finally got the service records. Hmmmm..... belt and pulleys were changed 20000kms ago.

New cambelt and kit was put on today. The bad news is that upon running the motor, main shaft of the fuel pump has too much slop and is pushing the belt off.
Looks like a new fuel pump :dbcry::dbcry:
Any Ideas/Suggestion etc...

Stu, talk to Rankin Diesel in Bayswater. Be prepared for the cost, though. VE pumps are expensive to fix.

hi guys. just an update on my disco... stubee is my bro in law.
yes it did have the updated pulley kit with flange. being a 97 update this was standard. the belt was dont at 184thou so only 16k ago. Which shows the garage indeed did fit one. But they did not start the engine with front covers off and watch the belt, they just slapped it together and grabbed their payment. Gordon, being fussy like he is runs the engine for 10 mins with casings off and watches the belt . he said you could clearly see it walking itself off straight away due to the slop in the shaft injector pump (even with the flanged pulley update kit) so this will now cost me a new pump or rebuild but he has saved me having to go back and get it done again. he wanted to find out WHY the belt chewed itself out not just put a new one on...... as for my opinion of gordon. good. i mean ha may not be the cheapest, but he isnt the dearest either. but he hasnt got all the awards for excellence throughout his whole career on his office walls for nothing. He really does know his stuff. i try and do most work myself but some things like this just have to be done right and i can trust he will do them to top quality.
so basically now i gotta hunt around for injector pump and go from there....:thumbsdown:

A fair suck of the sav is needed here, as it is a possibilty that AFTER the NEW belt was fitted and tensioned up, that the already worn injector pump began to loose its grip on reality.
I have seen a few failures at low km that CAN be attributed to disturbing the status quo of already marginal componenets, like just fitting a new belt and tensioning it(Alternators, water pumps etc), so I wouldn't be TOO hasty about blaming a workshop and its staff.
BTW, I have nothing to do with any of the mentioned places OR even know them.
I would like to just point out that it is NOT always the spanner spinners fault, so lets keep an open mind please...
