Stu, Yes I would suspect that too. Try not to keep cranking it or more damage could result. ALSO, drain a bit of the fuel out of the fuel filter and see if it has ULP in it

Sorry, but i've searched and searched.
My Brother in law has a 97 300Tdi Discoveryhe has had for 4 months and 200, 500kms. Car has service records from Deacon Autos.
Car started fine after work, he started driving down the road and noticed roughness and lack of power above 1500RPM so pulled into a carpark 200m down the road.
I have since looked at car and noted following:
- Car would crank but no start, (no power to fuel solenoid, so I jumped fuel solenoid).
- Car idles rough with white smoke
- Increase in RPM causes more roughness and thick white smoke from exhaust.
- Cambelt was changed 8000kms ago.
I'm working out whether to tow to LR Independent in Geelong or Bring home to garage (half hour drive)
Ideas?? I'm thinking slipped cambelt.

Only ever has BP or Shell Diesel in it. Father in law works for Shell and won't go near any of the imports.

Sure you or a starnger has not filled up with Petrol not diesel, I did once and had same symptons.
Like JC said, check the fuel, it happens.
Check the turbo hose. the right angle one from the turbo to the intercooler. they delaminate and block flow, especially at higher revs when the turbo kicks in. check inside because they can look fine from the outside.
First assumption would be the belt, or, if the pump sprocket itself has slipped (3 bolts underneath the idler setup, I think) throwing out the timing.

Just got back now. On closer inspection, looking underneath the inspection hole, bits of rubber are clearly visible. So it looks like it's done a belt. GRRRRR!!
So we towed it to the indy on the other side of Geelong, and will find out in the morning.
The worst part is when we purchased the car, deacon autos, specificaly told us that the timing belt was changed at 192000kms in february last year![]()
My BIL also now has to put up with the usual Landrover bashing bull**** at work.

Well I guees you're lucky in one respect - it seems the belt has just slipped and didn't break - could have been more expensive.
Get the VIN number and see if it needs one of the timing belt upgrade kits - but for a 97 should have been fitted at the factory, or if not it should have been done by previous owners.
