Where are you plugging in the OBDProsI can unplug the MAF plug and it doesn't make any difference and when I plug in my OBDPros scanner it cannot connect to the ECU.
G'day all,
First up - many thanks to all for your contributions, the information available here is simply mind blowing!
I have just bought a 97 Disco V8i with LPG - the price was right and I have admired Discos from afar for quite some time, so I jumped in. I have to say that (for its age) it is a magnificent vehicle and I should have done it sooner. Just over 200,000km on the clock but that V8 stills burbles quite nicely.
Anyway - onto the problem. It runs fine on LPG - bit rich, but I think that's solveable, but if anyone has any hints please let me know. Impco 200 conversion by the way, which was done when the car was only 12 months old.
The problem is that on petrol it gulps it in (30-35 l/100km city/freeway) and runs ok at speed but at idle it surges from 0 to 1500 rpm all the time.
I have checked pretty much all the things I could find on this site, but none seem to make any difference.
I can unplug the MAF plug and it doesn't make any difference and when I plug in my OBDPros scanner it cannot connect to the ECU.
So, simple question - how likely is it that the ECU has died? Is this common on Discos?

Plugging the OBDPros into the OBD-II connector under the dash - just below and to the left of the steering column.
Im sure the plug for the engine is behind the drivers kick panel,
Have a look for a plug there,
There are a couple of things that could cause it to run rich on petrol
Coolant temp sensor, it reports to the ECU for fuel mixture. (not the temp gauge on the dash)
Your MAF could be shot, you said it made no difference unplugged

Also look at the vacuum advance capsule - it can throw the timing out. (Rough method - suck on the vac hose that connects to the top of the plenum: you should feel resistance)
Chatty,

You live in SA.
Lucky you, give Jilden Reichart a call, also a member here, can't remember under what though but am sure he will see this link.
He lives in Adelaide hills and does his gas installs from home.
Very good and specialises on Landies.
Look him up in white pages.
