    MY 1st DISCO...

    Hi Guys,
thought it was about time to show my disco. Bought her bout 6 months ago. First land rover for me at 21. My old man and BIL stubee had one previously and i loved it. Anyway she had 191k when i bought her now she has just ticked over 200k. 1997 tdi manual - poverty pack. stock as a rock. had few problems so far:

    1. central locking just stopped working- turned out master solenoid buggered up and fried all the others. so i have replaced it with aftermarket kit, now works a treat.
    2. mucking round in the otways i snapped a front tailshaft was fun getting her back down the rutted hill as i was half way up.
    3. unfortunate timing belt replacement (was done at 183k b4 i bought it)... new belt kit and injector pump ... $2G later

other than that i love it... hopefully now i will have trouble free for a while
So far i have cargo barrier and have made a custom bullbar (thanks to poverty pack no ABS or airbag) with 240XGT light force spotties, GME UHF with AE4705 antennae and dual 12mm recovery points.
set of original alloys which look so much better than white steelies haha

Other mods that will come shortly are:

    • 2"lift kit (advice would be much appreciated)
    • 31" muddies (again advice would be great)
    • drawer system in rear with fridge tie down point
    • weld my own custom rocksliders and side steps
    • make a rear bar
    • 2.5inch exhaust

and many more.. thats just what i can think off at the minute... i also have photos of the full process of the barwork if someone wants to see them...
i love seeing other ppls projects and cant wait to do more things to mine!!!

Hi Four Stroke, good to have you on board. Hope it treats you well. I'm running 31" muddies at the moment and not a problem with a 2" lift. Just a bit of a Camel cut on the rear gaurds and no scrubbing. I find it a good size to start out with but are small compared to some others here. If I had a chance to do it again I would probley go 32".

    Cheers, David.

That front bar is a great look, and I've NEVER seen a front, OR rear shaft for that matter, break that way Good work! I think

And 2K was good for all that repair work, including a pump, So should be fine now for a looonng time to come.

Suspension; would need to know some bump stop measurements at present to advise on springs, and whether you are going to fit a winch at some point or tow a camper etc regularly.
just off the top of my head, LRA springs pink front and purple/orange rear with Bilstein or DeCarbon shocks will be a good combination. Go to Red fronts if running a winch, and White or White/Green if towing/ loaded up in the rear. Unless you are upping the performance with a VNT turbo etc then I would leave max tyre diameter at 31.5" (245/75/16) as the gearing will be too high. 235/85/16 (32") is right on the edge of a loaded Tdi Manual's capability IMHO and puts lots of strain on the clutch on hill starts. You CAN fi Defender High range gearing which is 20% lower, but your low range will be unchanged.

They are a good vehicle to have, a Pov pack has plenty of appeal for its simplicity

    Nice car and great colour.

I would also stick to 245/75, gearing seems to fit nicely.

Perhaps chuck a rear locker in, has certainly done me a world of good.
    Maxi is good and strong.
I run King springs with Bilstein shocks, 50mm lift and done that all most of my Landies.
Tiny camel cut at the back and works a treat.

Perhaps also do the intercooler and pump tweak and diesel Gas, gives a bit more oomph.

I have a sump and and diff guards etc, they do get a bit of abuse and helped me in a few situations.

I up graded stereo and speakers also as original is crap.

    Enjoy the ride.

hi guys, thanks for the input yeh i have heard the 245/75R16 (30.5") are a good match, that whats my bro in law had. but i have seen a very neat mint green disco near my house with what looks like a 2"lift and he has 265/75R16 (31.6") bfg all-terrains and they look like a nice fit. so might go that size or the 235/85 (31.7) perhaps just for that little extra? not that it will do much i guess over the 30.5... i wanna go have a chat to this guy to see what kind of suspension he is running... i got a pretty good quote for EFS.. has any run these and have a opinion? good or bad? also thinking bilstein shocks with either dobinsons coils or kings?
