usually it means (assuming its lifter tick and not liner tick) that you are shortly going to be up for a new cam and lifters.

Well I'm buying a Disco...HELL YEAH! '98 manual V8 on gas, can't wait!
It's got a pretty noisy lifter tick which doesn't sound bad but more so annoying than anything else. I've had lifter ticks for ages in my old car and they never hurt anything, just wondering if I should be concerned or if it's nothing to worry about and nothing that a good oil change wouldn't fix...?

I know I'm a newbie here but have worked with autogas for quite a while now.
Any tick when running on LPG is a worry in my opinion. General rule of thumb is any engine probs show up quicker when running on gas than on petrol. But depending on the issue they will more often than not get worse quicker on gas than on petrol as the engine runs a bit hotter using gas.
If it is running the older style conventional gas system I'd get it thoroughly checked before buying. If its running the new sequential vapour injection system then the lifespan difference between gas and petrol when there is an issue is significantly reduced.
Sigh.....just wish I could install gas in my own and cut these fuel costs......but I need my 7 seats......can't put a tank in there............
Hmm I sure hope it's nothing too serious. I've had it checked out by a credible friend who used to work on his own Rovers and said that the tick shouldn't be too nasty. It doesn't sound that bad it's just there and you know it could be quieter. I was under the impression it would just be a noisy lifter and wouldn't cause too much of a problem in the short (and even slightly long) term...but what you guys are saying sounds like it might be something serious.
I've pretty much already bought the car and I'm not backing out now but I still plan on taking it to a Landy specialist (probably the guy in Romsey) just to look over it and tell me what I might be up for in the years to come.
Sorry didn't mean to be a panic merchant, I just come across dual fuel disco issues weekly for work. Best I can say is no matter which of the 2 types of LPG systems it is running, get an upper engine/flash lube kit it if doesn't have one. And don't get ripped on it! We've got installers up here that charge $200+ for the kit + labour. Kit costs them under $80 and only 30 mins max to install.
Hey Young Angus, why don't you try and come out to the meet at Blackwood on Saturday. It's not that far from you and you can pick everyone brains (have to look hard). It would be a chance to look over other cars and swap ideas. Doesn't matter if you don't have it yet, drop by anyway.
Cheers, David.

The seller actually referred to the noise as more of a "ping" last night. I asked him if he could get his mechanic's opinion on it so I kind of get an idea what I need to do about it so it doesn't cause me any problems. He said that it's coming up on 200,000km so in it's major service they'll give it a good tune up and that should get rid of the pinging...it'd be nice if that's all it's going to take
Flash lube kit sounds like something I could get that wouldn't bee too much of a dint in the wallet. Being that it's coming up to major service time anyway I'll probably get all the ignition components (plugs, leads, coil) looked at carefully and replaced with new ones anyway too.
The meet sounds great! I'll probably be getting the car on Saturday or Sunday so I'll see if I can squeeze the meet into our weekend but if not this one then definitely another one because I definitely want to come to one of those! How often are the meets? Surely there's a section of this forum that has a bunch of dates and details about them on it?
Keep an eye on the Upcomming Events under the Tips, Tracks and Schedules section. People often put up day trips, weekend trips, gathering ect. If you want some company on an expidition post your trip and see who's in. It's alway a great way to see what people have done to there cars and get first hand advice face to face.Originally Posted by Young Angus

Got my disco today and part of the roadworthy meant an exhaust leak was fixed...now whatever tick or pinging noise I was hearing is completely gone. I must have just been hearing a leaky exhaust![]()
