    V8 Disco 1 wont Start ?

    G'Day all,

a customer of mine is having some problems with his 96 3.9 V8 Disco, It just stops and only starts now intermittently (not very often).

I looked at it yesterday and it started fine and run smooth !, Left idling for about 10 min's and it just stopped !, started up again and it run ok ! a few mins and it stopped again ?
Since it has not started again.
Due to the Symptoms I went back today and fitted a new Ignition module as it seemed to be showing all the signs of needing one ?? NO GO ??

He also tells me it went back to the dealer only a day before for alarm work and some lock parts in drivers door to be replaced ????

The alarm light is going off when the key goes on, doors are all unlocking OK ?? Could it be related ?
I had no more time today to look but what other checks to do ?

    Cheers

Sound similar to the issues I'm having with mine at the moment. It's a 1996 V8as well. It will start intermittantly and some times when it started idled smoothly. I think I have it sorted now as when I put a new coil in it jumps to life. I went through changing everything including the Amp, Leads, Rotor, Plugs but nothing worked until I changed the coil.

See my current post in the D1 section for more info.

    Cheers, David.

Coils seem to be a magic part...you wouldn't suspect them in most cases but so many times when you just replace a coil everything gets better...happened to me with my previous car.

In my experience immobilisers can play havoc sometimes too, especially if the symptoms are a car just plain "not starting" or even cutting out...you might find the immobiliser is just staying on or cutting in intermittently for some reason...they're great for anti-theft but a real pain in the neck if causing problems. I'm not a mechanic, but I had immobiliser troubles with my last car (not a landy) so if this car has one I would somehow take it out of the loop completely and see if the problem is still there, they can be very sneaky sometimes! (I'm new to landys so my apologies for not knowing if an immobiliser is something that comes standard on one).

iirc early disco 1 didnt have any anti theft device except for its magic fuel consumption trick that makes nobody want to steal it... i think the facelift disco 1 got a very troublesome system called the spider (i stand open to correction)

    Hi All

Am having almost identical problem to the post above. Started out of no where yesterday and felt and sounded like dirty fuel at first and commenced about 20klms after putting fuel in.

Coughed, sputtered and cut out going up hill. Got it restarted and to my destination but then had identical not starting, then idling and cutting out problems as above. Had it towed the 150km home but don't have the technical/mechanical nouse of any of you.

Anyone know of a land rover knowledgable mechanic in the Cleveland/Capalaba area of Brisbane?

I have been having problems with mine too, it seems tobe running now tho.

Firstly i would be changing out your fuel filter, check to see what crap is inside it, put some injector cleaner thru it as it sounds like a fuel problem.

If else fails, check you cap, rotor button leads and plugs.

I would be interested to know if you got ethanol in your fuel. I hear it is really bad if there's any water or other crud in your fuel tank, just picks it up and shoves it into your fuel pump. I've been telling people to use premium in their rovers because of the issues raised by a senior Impco tech in a workshop I attended recently.

Personally, not a chance in hell on that. Mind you, I should say, 'not knowingly'. I did used to fill up at a local 7-11 station using 'unleaded'. Until one day I saw a Shell E20 (or whatever they call their e-blend fuel) truck there filling up their underground tanks. Since then I've been paying through the nose at the local BP hoping what I'm buying is actually what the pump says it is.

In my case fuel pump seems fine. I'm down to looking at fuel filter then MAF in that order. don't know why I didn't think of coil (except that I am female and all this is relatively foreign to me) as I do own a gas conversion workshop and coils are notorius for being the culprits when running on LPG for spluttering and stalling problems!

I do have a small radiator leak in the upper drivers side corner, so getting that checked tomorrow to see if it is worsened internally and is depressurising and causing it to boil quicker - hopefully not and the fact the gauge says ok but it feels like it's running hotter is a pure fuel delivery issue!!!

oops.....as for coil - checked is this arvo and had one majorly loose connection - put your finger to it and raise hand and connection came with it - no pressue needed! Have tightened that and it has actually made a difference.
