Thanks for the pics, I always wondered what was behind the fascia.
Well I think I have dug myself a pretty big hole. I've got the '92 200tdi and I thought I was happy. A couple of things didn't work and that was ok, I'll get my hands dirty and have a bit of fun. I've got a manual, I should be able to work it all out and save a few bucks.
Reality has now set in.
The heater doesn't work and I thought I could work out what the problem was by pulling out the dash and looking it in the eye. Once the dash came out I was none the wiser and the manual I have makes no mention of the heater and how to remove it. I'll be buggered if I know what I'm going to do once I get it out anyway.
I suppose my options are:
* get a better manual (Which one?)
* get someone who knows what they're doing to fix it.
Here are some pics anyway.
Thanks for the pics, I always wondered what was behind the fascia.
Have you checked that it hasn't been bypassed for some reason?
Scott
So, are you saying that it's just a fan problem?
I can't see how being on the heat setting would affect the fan though but the A/C fan is separate from the main fan IIRC.
I was thinking along the lines of the heater itself not getting hot due to being bypassed (common mod if the core has a leak).

I could be wrong, but I think the control slides are worked by a vacuum actuator so you could check to see if that is working and opening the flap for heat to come thru.

So what exactly is the problem??? Does the fan not work or only work intermittently???
Pic 3 shows what looks like a small vacuum reservoir on the left of the unit, which means you may have vacuum operation of some flaps (i.e. switching between demist/dash/floor vents).
When the air conditioner is on the fan will work on some speeds but not all. This varies and requires a bit of jiggling of the control lever to get it going sometimes. Once it is going it keeps going.
When on the heater mode the fan doesn't work at all on any speed and it just makes a loud noise.
Clean the switches of the fan speed with circuit board cleaner
Fans not turning / sound jambed?? .... Either a stick is stuck in there / frozen bushes ... or the fans are just CUPUT ..... By secondhand from another D1 wreck
There are 2 sets of fans
1 set for the heater
1 set for the A/C ... (look under the passenger footwell)
