BP6ES plugs work nicely in my 3.9 on LPG.
Hello All,
I am looking at improving my ignition system having had the ignition amp die and having replaced it, and the distributor serviced (previous thread). The vehicle ran like a dream but it started missing a bit, again and the idle is running high and dropping dropping back too slowly. So, I am keen to do up the whole ignition system before taking it in for a gas tune and a check through the distributor and stepper motor etc.
I have browsed the forums and have come up with:
Magnecor 8mm (Electrosports 80) Ignition Cables,
NGK BP6ES (are these the same as the NGK “iridium plugs”?) or Bosch super 4 spark plugs. Any other recommendations for plugs for an injected gas system?
I have a new “standard” Lucas amp. Is it recommended that I upgrade it to the A&R dual timing power Amp (or will it fit at all?).
Also, would a high performance ignition coil help? Mine (original) is looking pretty tired and I can keep it as a spare if it were to be replaced.
Any assistance would be most welcome.
Thanks, Adrian
BP6ES plugs work nicely in my 3.9 on LPG.
BP6ES plugs are not Iridium but standard plugs for non EFI engines without a resistor. They could cause running problems with EFI in theory but that has not been my personal experience with BP5ES.
I have had ( the same) Magnacore cables now for 10 years with no problems, so yes I vote for them.
Be careful with coil choice as I see on this forum many "wild and woolly" coils. Bosch GT40 type coils are meant for breaker point ignition and a specific EFI coil is necessary. I have a Bosch 717 but I have a different amp though some on the forum have run them successfully with a standard amp, it is not recommended by Bosch.
I would recommend that Iridium plugs really work well on my 3.9 petrol EFI giving a smoother idle. I bought mine from the USA at landed about $11 each, and they are certainly worth it at that price. previously I have used BP5ES with good results, but they are technically illegal due to EMR in a 92.
When they serviced the dizzy did they replace the cap and rotor with genuine LUCAS?? I am sure you have read some of the posts on this.

You must run a coil compatible exactly with your ignition amplifier. Sports coils should be marked as suitable for your vehicle. Unlikely you will find one! The Lucas amp is pi**weak and I would airmail it to Afghanistan.
I personally have fitted many of my Bosch ignition conversions: see Lucas ignition amplifier replacement by Bosch 024
NGK spark plug BP6ES or BPR6ES (resistor) cross reference to Bosch WR7DC+ which is my personal choice. Also Bosch now do a double platinum plug range specifically for LPG. Bosch plug no. is WR7KI33S.
Do not use Bosch Super 4's, they are designed for fast cleaning on petrol and their gaps are not readily adjustable for LPG.
Bosch leads are good, now run 5year/100 000km warranty, LPG compatible.
Bosch make a rotor which although not listed for a Lucas V8 dissy appears to be an excellent fit: Bosch GB864 (XF Falcon)
My ignition upgrades are Scorcher dissy, Bosch (black) eads, Bosch coil, NGK BP5ES plugs, new vac advance pipe.
I am away for a few days, but will get into it soon after.
Should I go for a Bosch 717 coil and matching amp (Bosch
Bosch BIM024 module, as per Bee utey)? I will do some digging on my return- availability and price. The plugs and leads seem to be less of an issue?
Maybe I should try to catch up with Bee utey as I will be in Adelaide this weekend!
I would sart at the other end and replace the plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor as a matter of course before looking at the coil/amp.
The Range Rover amp and coil , if in good condition are perfectly adequate for the purpose.

AFAIK there was a crash about 4 years ago now and everyone on the forum then somehow got a 1970 join date.
But its been almost that long! I think 2001 or something.
I was looking the other day and realised it has been 5 years since I put the Thor manifold on.
Regards Philip A
it seems heaps of us joined in 1970. in the scheme of things I must be late 1970 as there are many on here that have been here lots longer than I
