Hahaha now that's definitely fair enough. I paid $8500 for it. He would have sold it for $8000 but without the roof rack...I wanted the roof rack and thought if I really wanted that $500 back I could probably just sell the roof rack anyway.
We did check it out and we saw the leak around the front diff but the smaller line leak we didn't notice. I knew about the alpine window rust (another thread) I was just seeing about fixing it. I'm right to have a go at this Disco myself and everything, I'm more just trying to learn about the car so I'm not so worried about what I've bought. The thing I love most about it is that it has heaps of character and just like my old car it has things that only the driver would know how to work (like the cruise control hahaha that thing is so touchy) so I really dig the car. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't taken to town by a dodgy road worthy...ie. if it was leaking brake fluid or something because the seller was pretty adamant about using his mechanics for the road worthy check and the work done. I thought it was a pretty good price anyway for a car of that age, it was just such a big decision for me and since a newer car like this is a complete unknown to me I'm trying to get as much info as I possibly can...and you guys have HEAPS of info going around so I'm just soaking it up like a sponge.
So thank you for all the replies to my tonnes of posts, this forum rocks :D

This motor oil line is a pressure line.
Please change it, because if it decides to split, it´s possible that the oil will be all pumped outside! The 300TDI from a mate here did this.
Your front diff's paint is beautifully untouched, taking leaks apart!

That leak could be anything from the V end seals , to the oil pressure relief valve cap, to the oil cooler sandwich being loose, to a rocker cover to, well anything. Front crank seal could also be a candidate.
How is the area around the dizzy. Is it wet there like mine? If so it is the end seals or maybe the rocker cover.
The BIG nut on the pressure relief valve can leak and a slight tweak can help.
When you change the oil next and have the filter off , give the nut on the inner thread of the filter base a tweak ( ie what the filter screws on to), as the cooler sandwich may have turned when someone removed a filter.
And look if ther eis a drool on the sump beneath the front pulley.
Your photos are not much help without close ups of the areas described.

By the looks of it, you paid top dollar.
As mentined before, have a look with the search area, lots of answers there.
In 6 months time you will probably just laugh at the issues you mentioned and get on with enjoying the car.
Well i hhope so anyway.
You said you had it checked out, by a Landie mechanic?
Ifa private sale, there are no comebacks so buyer beware.:o
It does look well maintaned on outside and a look i your service history should reveal who has been swinging spanners around it and give them a call.

Dammit I still thought I was getting a good deal at $8500...well considering I sold my old car and didn't have to add that much on top to buy this one I still came out alright...so long as I don't have to add too much more to make sure it's all in working order I'll be happy. Considering what a car like this is capable of I still think it's not a bad deal :)
I couldn't get it to a Landy mechanic so a 4WD experienced friend of mine (proper 4WD experience) who also spent a big part of his youth working on a fixing his own Land Rovers came to have a look and a drive and he did tell me that there was a bit of a leak but nothing serious and that it was a good honest car...so I was aware of all that might be wrong with it.
Private sale so no comebacks but I'm not interested in taking it back anywhere I really like it and I know that so long as I get my head around it I'll love it in not too long...a few quirks on a car is what makes me like them, makes them unique and not just straight down the line like a beige Toyota ;)
I don't have a written service history but I do know the Ultra Tune where it got all its work done so I'll probably give them a ring and ask about it. I still want to take it up to the guy in Romsey when I get a chance so he can have a good look at it and tell me what I need to be careful of.

in all honesty Angus.....you certainly could of bought a better car for what you have paid, but you seem happy with what you have which is what is most important and I commend your positiveness on the whole thing.
