You dont want to drive it more than you have to without the front shaft on.

hoping you may be able to help a not very experienced Disco owner here.
I have a 1994 300tdi, 340,000km, rebuilt engine 20k ago, which has a 2" lift (just put in). I have just had major vibration with the truck. Changed 1 front UJ 4 weeks ago, got advice to align the front drive shaft, so i did, then read the forum, took it in today to the local landrover center where they pulled the drive shaft off and found it had seized - the cardigan joint could not be separated. Hopefully i will have it installed back in the truck on Monday. This hopefully is all background information. Oh, vibration reduced by 80% while running on rear drive shaft only.
I have a whine / bearing noise / possible rumble comming from somewhere towards the front of the truck at more than 100kph. It is not noticable under this speed. It is noticable in 4th or 5th gear, but not when the clutch is depressed at that speed. The noise gets slightly quieter at 110kph and from that point on wind noise and road noise start to cancel it out. Having the front drive shaft removed has not changed the noise.
Tonight after getting home, I checked for heat on all wheel bearings and diff housings. All either slightly warm or little heat. Felt transfer case and gear box, these were quite hot. Park brake was cool, so was rear driveshaft uj joint. I presume a cool surface means bearings etc are being well lubricated.
So this seems like a possible gearbox issue? Please say otherwise as I have had the vehicle for less than a year and don't want to spend big money on it.
I previously had a Toyota FJ40 and did most mechanical work on it myself, but the Disco is a bit more advanced on the evolutionary scale and I am not too good at the more advanced stuff. Plus all my tools are metric...

Sorry, I should have said that the noise was there before the driveshaft was removed. I had hoped this was the problem but it doesn't appear to be so.
I may have misread the sequence of events...
front shaft noise and vibes is common if the DC joint is at all sus (I think you might have ment the Slip joint if its a TDI disco).A siezed slip joint will cause all sorts of problems starting with drive line vibrations, left long enough it will punch the bearings of the front diff or the tcase. (this is to do with the motion of the UJ's) so thinking the shaft was the problem you've removed it.
you still have noise.
if its not the same it can be the Tcase they do make a little more noise when they are running without the front shaft attached. A worn, abused or incorrectly oiled front diff will also make noise when its on over-run (which is always is if you have the front shaft out)
if youve put the shaft back in and the noise is the same you could be looking at a handfull of things.
fan noise, shot engine mounts, the flex plate (assuming its an auto) the diff and the Tcase bearings.
just for starters.

At 340K the diffs have an obligation to complain a bit.

any ideas how it is easy to check them in place rather than taking them out? There are no oil leaks or movement from the input bearings

Why not get your wheels balanced, I had mine done on Friday the worst was 200 grams out the others around 70 grams, amazing how many noises disappeared after the balance, Regards Frank.
good thought thanks. I will try this, although the steering has no vibration at all.
I've also got a meshing / gear noise developing in 4th and 5th gears as I go from a steady cruise and ease off the accelerator into a coasting state. The noise has developed over the past couple of weeks. Thinking of checking oil levels and condition, does anyone have any other words of wisdom?

Are you using ATO on the gearbox? if so this is not correct.
We have several threads about the correct type of oil in the 380 gearbox
after reading several threads on the subject of correct oils, I went and purchased Redline MTF + a T55 Torx head and should be able to do the oil change tonight or tomorrow night. Heres hopping it will solve some of the noise and synchromesh issues I have.
Tough debate between the Castrol Syntrans and the Redline MTF, I almost tossed a coin at one stage!
I'll post back how the oil change has affected the gear box
