Thread: Should the brakes on a Disco really "bite" if pushed hard? ...mine don't.

    Should the brakes on a Disco really "bite" if pushed hard? ...mine don't.

    This isn't so much a problem but just wondering how brakes generally perform in the Discos. I've been driving a crappy Toyota Hilux around as well as my old car and I'm used to brakes biting a fair bit if pushed hard. My Disco brake pedal is more of a smooth feeling brake pedal where it still works just fine but I was driving along and trying to get it to bite hard when pulling up to lights the other day and it wouldn't...it just kind of went on and pulled the car up smoothly but quickly enough. It's almost like if I did want the brakes to bite hard and lock up I'd have to really pound on the pedal with all my strength and then MAYBE it would bite.

    Some car brakes are harder than other and they're all different so I was just wondering how a Disco brake pedal generally performs.

    I don't think mine has ABS...I could be wrong though. I might try and slam them on and see what happens

    i have the same problem i generally have to pump the brakes twice before the pads grip, im changing min eout soon and freash new brake fluid as wells hope fully that should fix it

    I had another "almost near-miss" today. The Disco drives really well but the brakes feel softer than my Dad's old 1992 Falcon. I would have thought with the size of the discs all around the car and the fact that there are four of them the brakes should bite in pretty well when engaged, but on mine they are really soft and take a while pull the car up so I'm finding myself really cautious at the moment...I hate to think what would happen if I needed to stop suddenly.

    Is this a Disco thing the "soft brakes" or is it something I should really get looked at?

    Do the discos have the same brake booster the defenders have?
    My older defender's brake booster had cracks that had developed in it's casing that allowed air to be drawn in, so it was working to maybe 30%.
    I didn't realise until I had a close call, and no matter how hard I pushed I couldn't lock up the wheels. Bought a new one and WOW! Real brakes!
    I was very dissapointed that the whole unit is unservicable, and needs total replacement, such a waste!
    Just a thought.

    check the rubber brake hoses at the wheels, have someone depress the barake fully whilst you have motor running ( vacuum to booster)
    Check to see if there is any "BULGE" in the hose. If there is then full fluid pressure is not reaching the calipers as it's ballooning.
    Other than that do a brake fluid flush and renew fluid and bleed any air out.
    Brakes would be a roadworthy issue...... I'd ask questions before you kill yourself

    mine doesn't lock up at all due to a vacuum leak in the booster, very scary at times. Particularly when the family is in it. Hope to swap out the booster soon

    disco brakes should make you wish that you hadnt hit them that hard if they are setup and working properly.

    ID back the bulging lines and bad fluid diagnosys

    Well since the road worthy certificate that came with the car not two weeks ago said the brakes were working at 70% and were a pass I'm going to have to ask questions on this one. I just tested them out and tried to lock the brakes up my hardest while going down a hill at 60km/h and they just wouldn't lock up...that's some scary stuff!!!
