Thread: Auto or Manual????

I have a Tdi auto as well, and I can't speak highly enough about it. The auto removes the turbo lag, which can be accentuated by the manuals.
Going up hills the little bugger wants to sit at around 2200 rpm so while my mates doddle up in 1st mine wants to sit in 2nd or 3rd. (quite happily).
I generally just change back to 2nd to take the stress off the drive line and 1st if it's really working hard.
As others have mentioned the trade off is going down hills where the auto is higher geared. I turn on the aircon and that slows me down some.
If I ever damage the transmission I would consider the LRA Automotive option of putting a lower 1st gear and add a lock up 3rd gear. Although this does hike up the cost. I assume other transmission specalists would be able to do these mods.

    Hope this helps

    auto or manual

Have had an Auto Discovery now for 5 years and would not go back to a manual. Cruise control works when auto changes gear. On a manual you have to reset it everytime you change gear. If on a long hill with a trailer on, put auto back to 3 and it will control the speed uphill. Leave it in D and the cruise control will trip off if the pedal has been to the floor too long. There is a hill near Yarraman that I can only do 70k up it with an empty car trailer. I can go down with a car on the trailer, auto in 2, and it will do no more than 80k all the way to the bottom. Engine is doing 4000 rpm. And this is on LPG. When I was younger the rule was, do not try to "drag" a car with an auto. While the manual is changing gear, the auto just keeps going. Manual will only beat it at top speed. By that time the cops probably have you. Chris

Autos multiply torque through the torque convertor and give you much more grunt down low where you need it, an Auto is always in the right gear and you don't strain your driveline as much. An auto allows you to concentrate on where to put your wheels and there is no slipping clutches and revving the ring out of the motor to get over awkward spots, just ease over obstacles without damaging anything, much better IMHO, Regards Frank.

Thanks guys. Basically I was a bit apprehensive about the auto but apparently I needn't be. Now, to find me a truck....
