Drivers window....again!
Right, I've hit a brick wall with my drivers window!
Have had a good search and can't seem to find a solution.
Ordered a new drivers window regulator as suggested by many forum members a few weeks back, only to find when I took the old one out, it was fine! The 3 small spot welds were all in place. Only thing noticeably different was that the large square-ish nylon stop on the bottom rail was the wrong way up. So I thought while it's all apart, might as well put the new one in.
Before I did that I checked that the motor was running. No probs, little sprocket going round when I press the switch. Superb, thought me!
Put it all back together (minus the door lining), pressed the switch, and still no movement. The motor is spinning, as you can hear it.
So I thought, maybe the teeth on the sprocket have worn. Take it all apart again, teeth look fine, and there is definite resistance when trying to move the circular arm of the regulator by hand when the motor is bolted back up.
So my next question is....is there a particular "position" these things have to be in to put the motor back on? Can't for the life of me see how, but thought it worth asking.
Pulling my hair out on this one, at least what little I have left!!
Cheers in advance.....

When it is assembled is the motor definately turning? Or is it just straining and making a noise without turning?
How freely does the window move in the channel when the regulator isn't connected to the glass?
As far as I recall you don't have to line anything up when you bolt the motor to the regulator.

Spent the last few hours working on this flamin' window!!
All the components move VERY freely.
The motor even moves the assembly up and down now after a good re-grease, but ANY slight resistance and it stops moving, but the motor continues going.
Re-attached the glass and it just stops dead, as though the motor isn't strong enough to counteract its weight.
Looks like a new motor on Monday....!!
On a plus side, I did manage to re-install my ARB compressor again, and it seems to be working. So not a totally wasted day!!

Cheers,

Is the drive gear on the motor slipping on the shaft?

If I have the motor wired and running, but not attached to the metalwork, I can hold the sprocket/gear wheel and stop it with my fingers, but the motor keeps going, trying to spin it.
Is that what you mean?

Yep, sounds like that is your problem right there!
I don't know how the gear is retained. Press fit or a lock screw. If it is the latter then you might be able to tighten it. If the former it is probably new motor time.

Hey Kieren
Check with Kev at Jordan Rovertech. He normally has a stack of spare items sitting up on his mezanine floor. I got a good door reg for my classic from him for $20 w/o motor or $40 with! Didnt need the motor so took it off.
Could be worth a look.
Cheers

You're not the only one to have fun with these things Kieran - I spent all day working on mine yesterday.
Problem was, window went all the way down and gearing then disengaged, so could not wind the window back up. Simple fix - found the worn spot at the end of the gear arm, filled it with a bit of mig welding and ground back to shape.
Then the little "multi-plug" on the motor wouldn't re-connect, no matter what I did. So pulled motor apart, drilled hole through gearbox plastic section where contact pins protrude through, soldered new wires directly to motor contact pins and ran through hole, all protected with heat shrink. Found label on the side of the motor "Made in Fance" and thought "that'd be typical". Bloody frogs can't make anything properly, and here's Landrover using frog rubbish in an already questionable electrical system.
Re-assembled it all - window worked well until first time wound down fully to where my new welding came into effect - and the whole thing stopped. Motor still spinning but no movement up or down.
Removed and found that the three "spot welds" had let go. They call that welding ? Got to be joking, haven't they. I thought the poms were supposed to know how to weld, being the origin of the industrial revolution and all that.
Anyhow, drilled out where the imitation welds were and welded it all together properly, re-assembled, and finally had it all working by the end of the day.
Just another Landrover experience - ya gotta love it.
Cheers .........
