The pros and cons might depend on what the Disco will be used for as in being a daily driver to and from work in traffic or just to the local railway station and back each day. Or just a weekend family car or....????????
Hey Guys got a question for you.
I've got about $14,000 to spend on a Landy and I've been looking at the Disco 2. The question is what to spend it on as I have to cover insurance as well it's probably closer to $13,000.
So the choice's I am looking at so far are;
2000 TD5 auto for about $12k, 203,000km
1999 TD5 manual for about $12k, 213,000km
2001 V8 auto for about $12k, 131,000km
So basically i'm wondering what the pro's and cons are for each. I know that the fuel consumption of the V8 is going to be high so I'm also wondering how the engine goes being put on gas.
Thanks in advance.
Mark

TD5 auto : best all rounder for touring and towing.
TD5 manual: Best economy
V8 auto: best sound, best go, lowest km's, urban cowboy device
LPG injection best for the V8, about $4K-5K new. Mixer system possible but problematic, $2.5K-3.5K
TD5 can get LPG enhancement, $3.5K.
usage is going to be very much an all rounder. camping, bit of beach work, daily driver however there is also going to be a lot of time spent parked at a train station. going to slowly build it up for some longer trips away as well which does have me leaning towards the TD5 but nothing set in stone.
theres a White TD5 up here in brissy for sale, 2000 auto, with 2" lift, CDL installed, sidebars, Bullbar, big spotties, good tyres, roof racks, cargo barrier et all for about $13k. nearly bought it, but inlaws wanted a green one instead.
All too expensive, imho. If the V8 is in good condition it might be worth the money, but you can get TD5 less than 150k for that money and although the engines themselves are good and strong the other components will wear at the usual rate.
I'd also like to see some add-ons.
By way of comparison, my 99 TD5 auto with 2" lift and TJM bar cost me 12000$ with 125,000 on the clock. I spent about 1500 replacing oiled ECU and abs lead and 15,000 ks later its great.
I spent a fair bit of time looking, mind, and picked it up on Fleabay, but they definitely are out there
Yeah I know I could find one cheaper and there are a few out there for private sale which also sparked my interest. Unfortunately time is kind of short so I cant afford to be overly picky. So I guess I'm kind of stuck to a point.
Ok if I stretch the budget I think this may be a better option what do you guys think.

Models from mid 2001 up to the update models don't have provision for a CDL (center diff lock). This means a transfer box change or some serious mods to the transfer box, if you intend to do some serious 4WD-ing. This may be the case with the 2001 you are looking at.
D2's prior to this had all the mechanism in the transfer case at least.

I'd go the TD5 Auto for sure mate, the manuals are only marginally better on fuel, and they are a terrible manual as well (i own one myself), the first gear is far too highly geared and as soon as you put on big tyres you make it worse (mind you i have just gotten used to it) The auto's will handle it alot better and will be a hell of a lot nicer to drive.
I wouldn't ever buy a V8 in the Discovery's, simply because there is little to no difference in the torque (i think the TD5 might even have more but don't quote me on that) and the power is only marginal, and when you chip a TD5 a am led to believe it will go faster than a V8 anyway, without the big fuel bill and possibly rego as well (depending on your state, its terrible here in QLD) Plus diesels are known to last longer, and it will hold its value better.
My two bob anyway,
Shamo
