Following that line of thinking, driveshaft wear could therefore be contributing to the "audible boom".
I'm still thinking it's more engine related even though the vibration is hardly noticeable at higher speeds when the engine is spinning around 2250 RPM. On the other hand, the drone is not readily noticed when revving the engine whilst stationary.

 tried removing one driveshaft at a time to see if things improve? (sorry to many posts here to check)
