I think the 'TC' that jsbholden was refering to is the 'Torque Converter' not the 'Transfer case',
I see lots of transmission vibrations coming from suspension lifts, but not when in neutral,
with regard to the tranny the only thing with enough rotary mass to cause a vibration is the converter,
we see lots of both cracked flexplates on TD5's and also the pressed steel flange thats welded to the converter is prone to cracking,
but I doubt everyone that hears this noise has a cracked converter so I am inclined to think it a bit of both, ie a light harmonic may be a common engine charactaristic but a lond clanking from the bellhousing area may indicate a cracked flexplate or cracked converter flange,
Dave
Will check mine next week.....
if thats what he ment by ''TC'' then that make sence.
the very issue has just been rectified in a 2003 BA falcon work ute i have. for 2 years its had an annoying harmonic vibe around 80kph, enough so that it would nose hairs shake:eek: there was also a very nasty metallic noise that developed 12months later, sounded like a screwdriver stuck into a rotating metal fan. it all ended FINALLY on day when a pool of atf ended up on the floor.
the convertor flange was seperate to the convertor and a fllexplate bolt had come loose. that issue was present from the day work bought the car:mad: its had 1xauto, 1x tailshaft and now 2 convertors...all in 70 000k's...give me a land rover any day!

Not too sure that this is a TD5 issue.
Mine is a 2003 TD5 auto and NO issues at all with vibration or harshness.
Mods include removal of the CC and a Davis chip.

I have a vibration, but only at idle at the lights. I have traced it to the exhaust , specifically the engine pipe hanging of the turbo, i is the bellows type connector and not the better flexi type.I can get it fixed by fitting the other pipe for around $170.00.
a new stainless wire flex is only $50-60 retail.

One thing not mentioned is the internals of the Torque Converter.
I'm in the middle of having my 4HP22EH (std 4.0lt /diesel auto) rebuilt and the guy doing it specialises in ZF's. More particularly 6HP's (from falcons etc) and upgrading them for turbo upgrades and drag racing.
One of the things he specified was included in him rebuilding the box was modding the converter and rewelding some of the vanes/fins inside. Apparently one side of the converter has the fins fully welded but the other side is only tacked. These can crack and rattle in minor cases and in major, jam the converter, shred themselves and everthing else and kill the whole box.
Just a thought.
