Pretty normal for any diesel, particularly jap ones.
Even the D4 will puff a bit, particularly when the loud pedal is first pushed hard to the floor.
Done a bit of 4wding, but never had a diesel before. Recently noticed it's blowing a fair bit of smoke, but only under heavy acceleration. Like up a fairly steep hill with flat foot.
Is this normal for TD5's? If not, any ideas as to the problem?
It's a 2003-4 Td5 auto, rechipped (dunno what chip).

Black smoke = over fueling ~ chip to blame.
Blue smoke = burning oil~ mechanical fix $$$
White smoke = water/cold engine ~
I assume black smoke so, over fueling, check the air filter isn't blocked, or get a better chip.
Check the MAF sensor as well, this can cause excessive smoke as well as a clogged air filter, also if the wastegate modulator isn't working properly that will do it too.
Just been through the same drama, new MAF all good now.
