    D2 TD5 Offroading behaviour

    Hi Guys,

    I have a Disco D2 2004 TD5 manual...

Have a question.. took it this weekend on a dirt road on a farm which was slow going and some steep hills...
what I found was the following..
going uphill I was in 1st gear (not steep enough to warrant low range) and found the same issue sometimes in 2nd gear uphill..
when reaching points where its quite steep (and the revs drops to below 1500) it would then sound as if my gears are slipping.. with a high-ish frequency grinding noise.. from 2nd downgear to 1st and it disappears.. When this happens in first playing with the throttle will cancel this out. ( decelerate and then accelerate again)

anyone knows what this is or what could cause this to happen?

    Thanks in advance
    Anton

It's not the Traction Control cutting in is it? It makes the same sound as your ABS does when it activates.

very good point.. might have been. reason I did ask is that I had a defender before with TC.. and when TC kicked i didn't hear anything.. I do remember the TC light coming on in the Defender.. but that was on sand. where this issue was on hard gravel going uphill.. so I do think it might make more of a noise on hard surface.. thus could just be a red herring..
    thanks for the input.

Quite often on sand the traction control light on my D2 will flash up but it does not make any noise really - I think this must be the computer sensing a tiny bit of slip but not going hard to brake the wheel, because the wheel might have stopped turning faster than the others....but in really really soft sand with CDL unlocked (as mine only had until NOW!) it would be loud as the pump was smashing the pistons up and down and you couldnt miss it!

If you had centre diff locked on the fender and tyres down I doubt the ETC would be coming on hard.

    Cheers

    It's the TC working.
Playing with the throttle will get rid of wheel spin and TC.As "Others" mentioned.
Try slowing down and use low range.
The lower speed would also decrease any wheel spin.

    Cheers

Why such a resistance to using low range... I hear this so often it almost hurts, "not really bad enough for low range". You have as many gears in Low as High, why not USE them instead of labouring the engine?
You will find that the TC adjusts appropriately if you change from High to Low as well.
