Centre Diff Lock fitted - 02 with no internals...

    Hi all.

Well after 8 years of owning my 02 V8 manual and taking her pretty much everywhere - and certainly everywhere that I wanted to go - including deep soft sand and places like Straddie and Fraser towing I decided, more from a safety view point (reliability/safety) to get the CDL re-installed. Mine has the case with no internals at all. So I did the research and had Shane from Techno British at Moorooka do the job. Shane stuck in an output housing and internals (using as much of mine as he could internals wise) from a D1. I had him stick in a high low switch (which takes the form of another HDC button below the original which I will just re-name) - that being to make sure the computer knows she is in low range for HDC and aggressive traction control in low range (but interestingly I can now see what HDC does in high range...fun). He also stuck in a simple push pull T - handle that comes out on the driver's side transmission tunnel and looks neat enough to live with. It only needs a push/pull of about half an inch to the do the job which is sweet.

I have come to use the traction control in the past wisely - powering it up to get where I am going, backing off of course does not allow drive to be driven to the wheels with traction. I have also got a 95 V8 Auto with (of course) CDL and no ETC.

Well with that background having to two together is a revelation. Hill climbs in particular and just so much better traction wise. I should have done it sooner (as has been said on here before). I also like being able to set my own conditions on the traction control - on and aggressive with or without CDL; on not as aggressive (high range selected) with or without CDL and off with CDL....nice.

I am off to Straddie next week so I am dead keen to see how she goes on the sand. There were 2 places where I missed CDL before...taking off from a dead stop, particularly when she had stock tyres (the 31 80 profile dont seem to care) and also where I was in high range in soft sand at speed...she would wander whereas I know at least on gravel with my D1 they become MUCH more tidy with CDL engaged.

    CHEERS!

The CDL makes a huge difference on gravel roads,,

and try a few turning circles with and without CDL on the sand,,,
