D2 tyre opinions wanted

I've got the Cooper S/T 255/70*16. Not by my choice, they came with the vehicle. They've done about 65,000 so far. Look like they might go another 20-30,000km. I just put 2x new fronts on as previous owner didn't do a wheel alignment and 1x was feathered bad on the outer edge (although, we've done about 13,000km with it like that since we purchased the disco - doesn't appear to have worn much in that time ... with a wheel alignment too). Put the other old front on as a spare (and retired the never used Michelin XPC).

The Coopers have no signs of puncture repair. The sidewalls are holding up well (I air them down to 16-18psi regularly as we live at Stockton Beach, and run them 33/38 on the road), and there are no torn lugs on them. I've only done a small amount of rocky offroad with them ...

... although this sunday might see them get a real workout :eek:

I'm not a tyre expert, but so far I'm pretty happy with them. Not to noisy on road, still agressive enough off-road for what we do, seem OK in the sand. Haven't given them a real mud workout yet, but I'd expect them to do OK.

I've just fitted up a set of 245x70x16 Khumo KL71's, so far 5k in rough dirt roads small amount of wet muddy road but not enough to really test them but happy so far, not much extra noise but definitely driver adjustment needed to swerving around cars on highway and braking. At $240 each, nothing even comes close....nothing I could find. Tell me, how do you guys fit 265/75's under a disco? things must be awfully close underneath and your speedo must be out my miles (kilometers sounds silly doesnt it?)

I ended up getting a set of Maxxis Bighorn 265/75/16

Plenty of noise on the highway but lots of offroad grip

They are quite a tight fit even with 2" lift

how do you fit these under the guards and what is the diamiter?

I am planning to go for these in a275/65R18 but am concerned the new 2 inch lift wont be enough.

I have rcently lashed out and bought a set of Mickey Thompson Baja MTZs in 265/75R16 on Black Dynamic steel wheels (as my dedicated offroad set while I put Pirelli Scorpion road tyres on the 18 inch alloys for the missus to drive around town in). The car is a 2003 HSE (Disco 2a, V8, Auto, no lift as yet)

I was pleasantly surprised by their on road performance (while transiting to our closet muddy mountains for their first go in the dirt) with less road noise than I expected and pretty good grip in both braking and cornering. The off road performce was to be expected really - excellent. They had good grip and control on at-speed gravel roads and in the mud they have been unstoppable so far - and I have tried to get stuck to see how far they would go.

Although these tyres didn't fair too well in the recent 4WD Action Tyre Comparo (issue 146) I am more than happy wit their performance so far and have even put a matching set on my custom trailer (allowing for extra spares on those long trips should I unfortunately need them. Given that they are also pretty cheap compared to other muddies out there, imho they are worth a considered look.

I have 285/75 16's (Maxxi Bighorns)under mine with about 40mm lift, no clearance probs at all

Loving my Toyo Open country M/T's :D They have brutal grip offroad but are very quite onroad! 265/75 16 the open tread pattern does need to be right down in pressure on beach sand otherwise you can dig some very deep holes!:o

Get yourself some BFG KM2s. I have just finished 10k on mine, which included two serious off road trips and in between a lot of town and highway driving. These tyres have done away with the onroad vs offroad compromise of a genuine mud tyre- they are quiet, haven't affected my fuel efficiency beyond 2-3%, handle really well, and as for offroad, they are just awesome. I returned from a big trip from melbourne up through the Murray Sunset park and Darling river area today, and there was lot of rain in the area, and the soil got very sticky very quickly. i drove a 120km stretch of the Murray sunset park and with the diff lock engaged TC went off only a couple of times- meanwhile the other 4 vehicles in the party were reporting a lot of wheel slip etc. I know my father and cousin are both telling me they are buying these for their next tyres after this trip, they were that impressed. Good luck whatever you buy!

Choose the newer BFG KM2's over the original BFG mud terrain, as stated earlier it is a newer and better design and did win tyre shootout in 4wd action mag. I currently run Cooper ST's 245/75R16 have been getting excellent mileage out of them but next time I'll go more agressive and choose either BFG KM2 or Maxxis Bighorn depending on price, both are supposedly great tyres.

I just run a 2 inch lift and have a bullbar and some custom sliders, i'm not sure if you need the bullbar or not, you don't really need the sliders, i ran them without them for a while and they just rubbed a little bit when you had the wheel turned and was flexing which isnt alot and it didnt damage the tyre at all.

The overall diameter is 33" too by the way.
