Power Steering - Pump supply hose failure

The hose from the reservoir to the PS pump inlet failed (larger of the two). Alloy U tube at lowest part of hose had rubbed thru on the front left hand corner of the sump. Not a hard job to replace ... but I did take a PAS shower in the process

I noticed, what I thought was, a pool of water from the A/C drain as I back out at work last friday ... didn't think anything of it. Pulled back in a little later, and back to work. About 2 hrs later had to go to the car ... WTF, a giant puddle of green PAS around the front LH wheel ... quick peek grab some insulation tape and strap it, wrap in a short peice of 25mm poly pipe about 25mm long and add a couple of hose clamps for good measure (this hose is a gravity feed, not pressurised ... thankfully).

I just finished replacing the hose 30 min ago. A little twist at the pump end to keep the hose in free air, not against the sump, and jobs done. Lost about 700ml PAS doing the hose change ... and almost a whole reservoir in the work carpark ... PAS stains concrete and doesn't seem to wash out ... ooops

Anyway ... check your PAS suction hose people !!! ... I guess losing all the PAS fluid at highway speed to be hazardous to the life of the PAS pump.

I only found one thread about this with a quick search on aurlo ... not a common problem ?

my pump didn't leak but failed internaly?? and the pressure side i had to have a snap-on crows feet and a 3ft braker bar on it to crack it off,

i do remember been told that the early ones had probs with joints leaking, seen a couple hoses split but this was from rubbing not a age failure??

Yep. Just failed due to rubbing thru against the sump. The old hose in in excellent condition otherwise. I'll repair the alloy U pipe in the hose and keep it for a spare.

A very common problem!!! caught mine when I did the oil pump bolt.

The basic problem is caused by the fact the hose uses a spring type clamp (see in top piccy) which allows the hose to rotate with the engine vibration and hence rub on the sump, to stop it happening, I fitted a normal type jubilee clip on the hose and that way you can tighten it more than the spring clamp holds it and rotate it into a position to hold the hose away from the sump.

Thanks for that U.P. That is exactly what I had. They are the photo's I would have posted up ... if I had taken photo's ... The rub through on the pipe and sump wear are identical. Yep, I replaced the spring type clips (I sell these at work as "Cobra Clips" for clipping off low density poly pipe fittings in irrigation systems instead of the plastic ones most people use). They work well for that application.

When I removed the clip at the reservoir, the hose was a bugger to get off the barb ... needed a screw driver jammed down the end of the hose and worked around the barb to release the hose ... but the hose at the pump connection, when the clip was removed, just slid right off without any great effort. I can see how it could twist over time with vibration.

Replaced clamps with some quality all s/s Norma Clamps and tightened real well, but I'll be checking the pump one at each service from here on just to make sure.

    The Disco has done 134,000km.

    Thanks again mate!

Yes, not an unusual problem unfortunately. I have replaced quite a few with plain hydraulic hose, looped down still, but missing the rub points that are everywhere around there

    JC

... and there's PLENTY of rub points to be found in that part of the engine bay for sure.

I might still yet add a few cable ties and some conduits just for peace of mind.

I used grey electrical hose & a couple of cable ties to stop mine rubbing together. That PS hose also rubs on the auto trans cooler line on mine,so also used grey hose on it.
Another one to watch is one of the A/C hoses & the return oil line from the turbo,& also the fuel line & bracket on the drivers side above the rear axle.

There's also a few rub points around on the other side of the engine bay as well,& those of you with ACE,there's heaps of rub points around, mainly on the passenger side of the engine bay.

I had this problem last Christmas.

I thought it was the pump so ordered a new one that night. It arrived the next morning - phew, we were catching a ferry in 7 hours. Turned out they had sent a Freelander pump Whilst I had the old pump in my hand I thought it looked dry and felt fine so investigated further to find this pipe had split and it wasn't the pump leaking.

I used metal-set (or quick metal, whatever you guys call it - like putty which dries hard) and then tightened a jubilee clip into it slightly/gently.

Loaded the truck up and showered whilst it set, then headed to the ferry figuring I'd phone the RAC in Ireland when I got there...

...anyway, over 14 months later it's still there, hasn't leaked since and the jubilee clip is acting better than the rubber sleeve LR used to "stop" the rubbing

Truth be known, that repair will probably last forever.

The hose is under no pressure, as it's a suction line ... it's almost a gravity feed (it's under the slightest vacum when running).

That peice of refrigeration foam sleeving for protection is a joke!
