I guess since I'll be replacing the air springs soon, it would be a good time to pull the compressor and give it a once over/check/clean. Thanks for the tip on the wiring grommet Vince!

My air inlet filter is high, dry & clean(ed).

afaik the weekend was the first deep river crossing(s) it's done. I've popped the cover and given it a cursory glance when looking for an SLS air leak recently, and it looked pretty clean on the outside, couldn't feel much if any crud in the bottom of the tray.

The intake air is sucked in through the filter (behind left rear tail light)passes through a silencer then through an air dryer and into the compressor before entering the valve block then airbags. Any moisture in theory get remove in the air dryer.

On the exhaust cycle, the air passes out of the airbags, back through the valve block and back through the air dryer picking up the trapped moisture before passing back through the silencer and out to atmosphere. That is suppose to keep the air dryer dry.

Unless there is a saturated air dryer, I would think any water in the system has come in from somewhere else like the cable entry points mentioned by bluerazor.

I had heared that the quick disconnect coupling (situated just above the rear exhaust pipe) that couples the air intake filter hose to the hose feeding the compressor is a potential point for water to get in. I had mine wrapped in plastic and a couple of cable ties just as a precaution.

Just my 2c if the air passes through a dryer before the compressor the dryer will infact do little as the compression process - in piston compressors- will always create condensate due to the air being heated as its compressed (im a service tech for industrial piston and screw compressors). If you require dry air in the airbags then re-route the airlines to pass through the dryer after the compressor but before the valve block.

I replaced my SLS compressor 12 months or so ago and noticed with the new unit they have changed how the power wire enters the casing.

At the time i thought "ahhh that's how the water got into it" but the new unit has started rattling its head off after 12 months so i pulled it out and opened it up and guess what its full of water again and the bearings are of course RS.

But i cant see how so much water is entering into the compressor? I checked the filter behind the tail light and the felt filter is dry.

I checked the "muffler thing" for cracks and found none but it had water in it.

I noticed there are 2 pipes exiting the muffler, 1 goes up to filter (inlet) and 1 goes into the chassis rail (exhaust)

Im wondering if the exhaust is where the water is entering?

    Unhappy May save $

Just organise a new compressor from Famous Four - Independent Land Rover Parts, Accessories, Sales & Servicing Specialist - Land Rover Parts, Land Rover Accessories, Land Rover Vehicle Sales, Servicing & Repair , works out about $530 delivered. Earlier today phoned the local LR and retail is $1200, or $1090 trade. Great bargain until you sit back and realise that you have still shelled out over 500 and it won't be the last time either! Can't wait to pull the old one apart and find out if it is water or dust damage or just worn.

Just found some time and pulled my old one apart. There is a lot of vertical scoring on the bore and while it is dry inside it is all brown and dusty so I wonder if it has had the water treatment at some time and just worn things out. It is still working but if I put my finger over the outlet I can hold back the pressure so I think the piston plastic ring is leaking with the scoring of the bore.
