    your weekly amigo post

In case anyone is missing a 3 amigoes post heres mine.
Can you get a clue where to look first (sensor issues or abs/sv issues) by the symptoms. My 04 D2a's are:
    1. Can be cleared on restart
2.Can visit when just driving along, don't always have to be brakeing
3.Heres the strange one--on a shortish regular journrey (say daily trip from work to home) they will appear at around the same point give or take 200 meters--( things warm up--temperature related?)

A smug Prado owning mates solution is I take another route home.
Assuming its abs/sv problem have people found the u.s. Hummer solution to be a permanent fix. They would have v8s there but I guess that shouldn't make any diff.
    Any advice appreciated
    Cheers

Mine usually show most when I'm shifting from (P)ark through to (D)rive.
As soon as the stick hits (R)everse.....ding, ding, ding.....and the little critters are back.

99% It is your shuttle valve switch. Most likely the built in fault from Wabco. Check your earths first.
Fixed my sons 2 weeks ago same symptoms. Do the search and the tutorial will be there.3 dead Mexicans woo hoo!

    Here's a rather unorthodox approach ...

Crawl under the car. Find the wheel speed sensor cables where they exit out of the back of the hub. Follow them up the brake lines .... now re-adjust the clips that hold the cable to the brake line ... wiggle them about a bit, and try to slightly re-position them (the cables) if possible (won't be much) ... whole idea is to make the sensor cable sit in a slightly different position to that which it has been sitting in all of its life ...

    ... your probably saying WTF ?? .... I own a 2004 D2a !

Tell me what your result is ....

    Kev..

Oh, also, how worn are your brake pads ?

Been thru the same for about 5 years with 2000TD5 (90k TO 180k). I have a 20 minute trip to work & the 3 amigoes appear after about 12 - 15 minutes , quite often at the same place where the road lifts on the left side intersection. If i went 4W driving they would not come back for a month or two -- so I assume use it or lose it. Nanocom sometimes said sensor (varied which one) but always said shuttle valve as well. They would reset on start up most times but not always. They would also come on if it sat parked in the afternoon hot sun & when you powered up they would be on. So in the end after heaps of info from this site I purchased a shuttle valve kit with seals from Falconworks in the USA $173AUD incl postage - many thanks to Bruiser69 & other people on here. I put it in 2 weeks ok - no 3 amigoes since. Bleeding the brakes & modulator was easy with nanocom & power bleed. I did this work myself but if you dont want to do it, then buy the part & take it to a brake place or mechanics -- its not hard -- took me 2 hours. Also see the post by some guy in the Virgin Islands - I could not find any problems with my electrics but when pressing the old shuttle valve switches, one switch seemed to switch at a slower speed like it was sluggish or clogged - I cut it apart but could not see anything different. You could see one side where the seals/brake fluid was seaping out of the shuttle valve.

But -- with an 04 2a I think its more likely to be a sensor so get your error codes read -- use to cost me $55 before I had a nanocom. Nanocom cost $456 and i have reset many times to get my monies worth.

    Hope this helps

Yep, did a custom bypass of the faulty PCB soldering internal to the Wabco ABS block and no more amigos for about 4 months. New bout was solved by a power bleed. Have also had problems when one tyre goes flatter than the rest - leading to a slightly different rolling diameter and the sensors mismatch accordingly.

Thanks all. At least there seem to be successful fixes whatever the cause. The amigoes are getting too familiar with me.
Fluids: thanks, have tried wiggle therapy before but will go further up the line
gregsmith: they'll be baaack! trust me
stevep: I think you have been driving my car. Get everything you say including an amigo holiday after a club trip (& using HDC--a clue I wonder)
zzsteve: different tyre pressures is a new angle.I have one with a slow leak so I'll check it out.
I reckon owning a L/R and always staying mentally balanced would be hard without this forum

    Hi Discolaw,

Had the same issue, would come on randomly, even when still at the lights!, some days nothing, some days everytime the car started.

Fitted a new shuttle valve switch to no avail even though nanocom was showing shuttle valve switch failure. Being that following the tutorials on the site was an option, being time poor and not that technical minded as some of the guys on the forum, I research other options and went down this path:

Land Rover Discovery ABS Pump/Module ECU WABCO - eBay, Land Rover, Car Parts, Vehicle Parts Accessories. (end time 22-Apr-10 23:15:33 AEST)

Communication from them was great, received the reco'd modulator very quickly, and had it fitted here with the brakes bled. Touch wood after 2 weeks, nothing all good so far, and had had ABS come on twice under heavy braking, again no lights.

For what cost me approx $600 all up fitted for me it was worthwhile. Other's could save money by doing the fitment themsleves, for me it was not an option.

Just another perspective, hope this helps.

    Cheers

A comment with no offence meant on the modulator problems.
Just because the diagnostics tool say SVS doesnt mean it will be fixed by changing the switch or spending thousands on a new modulator.
Diagnostic tools point you directly to the point where the fault is associated, not neccessarily the culprit. Relying on the diagnostic to tell you what to change is folly without suitable testing / checking and understanding of the system.
Diagnostics tools need to be used in conjunction with thorough testing, checking and understanding of the system.

    cheers
