Gearbox stuffed but no new ones?

    Gday All
Been told the gearbox on the 99 TD5 is stuffed.
Something about pump gone, will fail soonish, not to go too far away from civilisation or any long trip to avoid towing bill.

Thats all fine and good. Im not automotively inclined, know nothing practically or hands on about them other than the theory behind what they do, have no reason not to believe where it gets serviced as they have exclusively serviced the car for the couple of years Ive had it and its in pretty good nick due to them. I always maintain it comes out of the workshop better than it went in and I dont feel Im being spun any yarns.

However, I dont understand the not pulling it apart and fixing the pump verus ripping the gearbox out and putting in a new one bit. Is it that much of a "consumable item" . Happy to be educated on such things.

Have been quoted about $4500 to get it done but was told there currently are NIL available. Is that about right cost wise?? and surely there cant be no new gearboxes around. It just seems conceptually strange for a 10 year old vehicle there are no new parts available or do I have an unreaistic expectation that im happy to have corrected by those in the know

just looking for a second, third and fouth opinion

    may thanks
    Mat

    An auto I assume?

If so, get your workshop to have it overhauled by ZF themselves. I'd actually be surprised if ZF doesn't have an exchange transmission ready to go.

They're only down the road from you at Arndell Park.

I am pretty sure that All Four x 4 Spares at Kotara, Newcastle will have an overhauled replacement ZF for your vehicle. It is worth a call for a competative quote.

I did a ZF repair here in SA by a tranny mob 3-4 years ago.
I was told they are great, strong and long lasting boxes given they are well serviced with new fluid every so often(40K) and perhaps a cooler.
Parts were very easily available and an exchange was $2900.

    Just FYI.
