245-75-16 is about the limit before it becomes noticeable.
Up to 235-85-16 is ok, wider induces drag and is noticeable, with this size you wouldnt want to tow anything heavy.
Hello all,
I have TD5 Auto Discovery with stage one tune and boost box and some other stuff, what I want to know is what is the biggest tyre I can put on without lossing to much power, or changing diff ratio's and so on.
Would be interested in what other people haveput on and how well it goes as I do a far bit of sand driving. I have the 29 inch tyres on it now.
Thanks
Ian

Ian, the standard 235/70-16 is 29".
I'm running 255/70-16 which is 30" or 3.8% oversize.
Tombie's suggestion of 245/75-16 is 30.5" or 5.3% oversize.
I don't notice any issues with the 255's and we do alot of sand driving (beach). Air them down to 16-18psi and all is good. My Td5 is not chipped. Just the EGR removed and it's an auto.
With your chip, you shouldn't have any issues with the above sizes, and alot of folks here run 265/75-16's and say there's not an issue (if you're chipped) - They would be 31.65" ... 9.4% oversize.

I think you will be able to run the 235/85r16's fine with the chip. These are the biggest diameter i reckon you could go though (which is what you wanted) and that size is tall and thin rather than the 285/75r16 which is the same tallness but fatter, you want to have the thinner tyres if you are going to do alot of beach work as you want to have a long thin footprint so you still have alot of tyre on the ground but you don't have to push as much sand in front of the wheel which makes it alot easier on the car.

Teh 265/75-16 is about the same height as the 235/85-16 at about 32". The 285/75-16 is closer to the 255-85-16 at 33"
Cheers
