    D2's & D2a's-- differences

    Hello All
Wondering whether anyone has listed the differences between the D2 and the D2a. As a D2a owner I sometimes find differences in what articles, posts etc.say about discos 2s. E.g. the D2a has sealed a non greasable sliding joint in the front prop shaft.
I believe there is a bigger intercooler (internally) and possibly the oil in harness issue was fixed and of course the CDL is back in the D2a. The EGR system has a cooler. The 3 amigoes issue is not cured which is difficult to understand after a model run of 6 years. How can LR accept Wabco putting out a product with known faults worldwide for so long.
Anyone else found other differences apart from face lift issues?
    Cheers

    There are several CDL differences,

Early D2s had the lock but no actuator ( anyone got a spare?), later D2s had nothing and the D2a has both lock and actuator.

That just about exhausts my knowledge on the matter but im sure there will be plenty more learned people to help out.

    Also,

Front lights, bumper & grill is different,as are rear lights.Fuel cooler is different.Speedo & some dash switches are different.Classic was run out model, came in Town Or Country versions.Something is different in the engine or engine ECU as torque is up in all auto models,or maybe it's the larger intercooler.

Oil in harness will still eventually occur,so will 3 amigos if a fault appears.

    That about exhausts my memory.....

Some D2as have an EGR cooler, not all.
No torque changes witht the update - autos got an extra 40nm around 2000.

    Here's a few more..

Panhard rod changed mounting position and length to reduce bump-steer.
Bush inside rear of rear tailshaft changed to metal-cased for longer life.
TC casing extra ribs to reduce distortion and noise.
More coil spring options to improve ride height consistency across options.
Shock options rationalised - no special shocks for ACE vehicles any more.
Revised ABS ecu logic to go with the introduced CDL.

I thought Amigos was sorted on 03-04 Discos. Do Classic models still get the problem?
    Thanks

    Yep! Mine does ... occaisionally

... and, didn't the D2a get the P38 rear diff ? (Has same front diff as D2, but rear is different to D2)

Fuel flap release button is now rhs of instrument cluster instead of in centre of dash with hazard light switch.

Front lhs body mount strengthened due to cracking issues.

Keep 'em coming folks. This could be a good list of the differences ... there's quite a list I believe.

I don't think the diff comment is correct.

ALL body mounts strengthened - thicker steel.

Yep - one has an "a" and ones does not....

Seriously apart from the CDL there isnt much in practice in it. I have an article from LR Owner International that list it all out - over 200 changes from memory including supposedly better brakes (...'breaks'...??). Having said that I bought the very last of the D2 in 02 (third last vehicle of the range to be sold in Oz) and my mate purchased his D2a about 6 months later. I have 158k on mine with a lot of heavy towing and a lot of off road work. He has 90k and very little of either. I have had him off road with me - ie both vehicles in the same spots. I have driven his car and been in it many times. I literally cannot see where the 200 changes are in terms of driving or feel at least. As for reliability there is nothing in that either I reckon. He has had 3 Amigo faults, a clutch fault and a blown oil pump that nearly cost him his engine, and blocked air con drains that soaked his whole carpet. I have had 3 Amigos once and modulator replaced under warranty at 40k and not a drama since. I had the front springs replaced under warranty - his needs it but hasnt had it done. They are both 5 speed poverty pack V8's. Mine has run LPG for the last 60k approx.

    Cheers

PS. The ONLY reason I would actively look at a D2a over a D2 would be the CDL

What the others said--amigoes still visit the D2a. I am about to do the V.I/Hummer solution. Hope to have the success others have had with it.
Back on to D2/D2a differences, is the rubber rotoflex at the end of the rear drive shaft only on on D2a's
    cheers
