    Radiator Leaking

As usual, I fix one thing on the D2 and another comes up.

The latest fix was to replace the steering column (seized uni joint) and have a speedy sleeve put on the balancer shaft and replace the timing case gasket again.

After doing these there is now a leak in the top of the radiator where the plastic cover screws into it.

Is there any way of fixing this without having to replace the radiator?

Same happened on mine in the same place and was fixed with "bluish" sealastic compound by local mechanic, cant tell you what was used but it held for two yrs then I replaced the radiator for other reasons.

    Thanks.

The leak first started just after I bought the car and the mechanic in Rocky fixed it with some sealer, since then after having some work done in Brisbane the leak is back, they said they where going to put sealer in there but it does not seem to have worked.

I might see if I can get some sealant myself and have a look on the weekend.

Can I ask where you sourced your radiator and how much it cost?

I have been told just over $800 for a LR radiator.

Radiator was $600 from AMV (Ringwood) which seemed really cheap at the time since I was spending over $1700 replacing the Head Gaskets , I put a new Viscous Coupling (Fan) in as well as that was slipping too much. All been good for the last 12 months.

    I have had a look at a few places and have found the following;

Std. Radiator Around $450 delivered to my door

    OR

PWR Full Aluminium Radiator for $990.

I know that the PWR unit is obviously double the cost, however I like the idea of a full aluminium unit and getting rid of those plastic tanks on the standard one.

    Any thoughts?

Is it worth spending the extra money?

I dont know about the TD5 Rad, maybe my bill was inclusive of labour. At the time I had bigger worries. The initial sealastic worked perfectly but I reckon should only be used as a temporary fix if possbile as you cant tell if it'll ever let go and when (or where). I knew my HG was on its way out and timed it to get the whole lot done at once.

    radiator leaking

Do you mean around the screw which holds the radiator shroud in place?

If so,its pretty common with after market radiators, the hole is either too deep or the screw too long and ends up penetrating the water passage.
Easy fix is to wrap teflon tape around the screw and finish off with a small O ring on the shaft. When you tighten it up it should seal fine. But keep an eye on it.
Another fix is to tap the hole and replace with a fine thread screw in place of the coarse self tapper it uses.
