    D2 V8 - Ticking noise

    Hey,

My D2 V8 has started to make a reasonably loud ticking type noise, very noticeable at idle and when under load but seems to go away when coasting or on very light throttle.

Seems to be engine rpm dependant on how fast it ticks rather than road speed and sometimes it seems to go away for a while before returning. I think it's worse when cold and quietens very very slightly when warm but there's not much in it so it could just be my imagination. There is no noticeable difference in how it drives since the ticking started, not feeling down on power etc.

I've run 500ml of auto fluid in the oil for 10mins at idle to give it a clean through before changing the oil out for fresh HPR10 but this has made no difference.

Not using any coolant so i'm hopefull it's not a slipped liner, the exhaust manifold gaskets look a bit of a state so i'm thinking it could be one of these leaking - but is that likely with the symptoms i have described or does this scenario suggest bigger problems elsewhere?

    Thanks,

    Al

Sounds like it could be your exhaust were it joins the header to the cat section, the flange in there goes often, easy fix and only about $12 from memory, easy way to check is when it's cold fell around the edges and also if u have access to a stethascope it should pick it up. I hope that's all your problem is mate.

First id try to narrow down the source of the noise - Use a piece of garden hose or similar ~1meter long....put one end to your ear, and move the other end around the engine bay while listening for the noise - try and isolate the area where the tapping noise is coming from.

Let us know (my guess would be the tappets)

Oh, and putting auto trans fluid into your engine isnt the best thing for it - just get the car warm before you drain the oil...that should suffice for standard oil changes.

Had exactly the same issue with mine a few months back.
Drove me nuts! Checked everything "major" only to find it was as Disco99 describes.

    All sorted now. Easy.
Hope it's as good news for you!

Yep, it's usually either the manifold gaskets or the 'Y' piece.

Thanks guys, it's not the header-cat join in my case unfortunately - had a good check around it and it's solid and not leaking, the gasket there was replaced not all that long ago when it was leaking with a different less ticky more raspy noise though so i know what you mean.

I pulled the manifold off the engine last night so will get some new gaskets today to see if that sorts it this evening. Fingers crossed.

Yep, it was the passanger side manifold gaskets, new ones on and the noise is gone.

    Phew! *big sigh of relief*

    It will come back....

I have to tighten the rear Exhaust Header Bolts on both sides of the Engine every few months.

Forward bolts don't come loose only the rear ones.

Yep .... and then you will strip the threads in the Alloy head

I find the cure to be ....

    Take the

    ......off

    Throw the ....

    in the ...

(Could use them as wall art??)

Clean the surface of the headers ... And smear a SMIDCH of High temp silicon over the manifold ....

    Then ....

it back up .... and you will never

    ..... that noise again

    Works for me ...

    Cheers
    Mike
