    D2a V8 gas conversion

I havent had any luck searching on this so I am hoping for some useful feedback on converting my D2a V8 to gas.

I have heard good and bad about them but want to know from the Landy peeps who have done a conversion.

    What different types are there?
How much space do they take up & where can they be mounted, fitted etc?
What is the rough out of pocket cost after the goverment rebate?
Do the systems need to be serviced, maintained etc & how often & is this costly?
    Are these systems reliable?
Does performance drop & if so is it considerable?
What gas consumption should be expected?
Is there a recommended supplier/installer in the brisbane area?

I really appreciate the time you spend reading & responding to this post.

    Thanks in advance,

    itchynipl

It is possible to get a good functioning gas system on a D2, but your installer must understand what is needed. Like all modern vehicles there are ways peculiar to the beast. Find someone in your area who has done at least one successfully and will allow you to talk to their D2 customer. Cost can be anywhere from $2K to $5K depending on what you want.

A question if your don't mind?

Have you sat down and worked out how much you will save in fuel bills on LPG versus petrol over say 100,000 ks of driving?

I wouldn't mind betting it isn't that much of a saving. I have not sat down and crunched the numbers but using the old upstairs computer at first glance to me it doesn't seem that attractive.

I worked on the basis of using the good later model injection systems which are about 5k up front then less the rebate of, from memory, about 1.8k or so.

I'd be really interested to hear from anyone who has crunched the real numbers and looked at the advantages and disadvantages.

    Just a thought.

    cheers,
    Terry

$5k is top of range system, get a better price and less rebate of course it will pay for itself in under a year.
I had several V8's done, I had a basic system installed and the rebate pretty much covered the install so I was very happy.
The full monty gas injection I am sure is much better but I never tend to keep cars that long, well not until now anyway.

Go the gas, it will serve you well.
make sure its by a guy that has done a few Landys though as said previously.

    What about the new excise?
Watch the fine print, new excise on LPG

In 5 years the saving on the above calculation will be $1635 assuming that petrol and gas price relationships stay constant.

Savings could be wiped out by just one or two problems with the gas setup needing extra service unless you are mechanically minded. Judging from these forums problems with gas installations are pretty common eg seized petrol injectors, gunk in converter, water leaks into gas system.

In addition you lose either your range or storage capacity.
I am just looking from my perspective where I could not do without my storage capacity or current range with a Long Range tank.

You may have different priorities but the above should be considered.

If the formula used to compare costs for a 4L D2 V8 between LPG and petrol uses 20 litres per 100 ks as the average fuel consumption on petrol then there might be a problem.

My D2a doesn't average 20 litres per 100, it averages 16.5 litres and I have been taking note of fuel consumptions since I brought the D2 over 10 months ago.
I consider 16.5 L / 100 k isn't that bad for a 2.2 ton low flying brick and if my numbers are about average then that means it would take quite a bit longer to recover the conversion costs.

If I'm wrong then please tell me how?

    cheers,
    Terry

D2 - 02 model 5 speed manual. Owned since new. LPG a few years ago now. Single point mixer (old tech) combined with LCS-2 lambda controlled converter (new tech) - so not LPG gas injection - and a LOT cheaper. 15-16L/100k in and out to town from the burbs...20l/100k in and out to the burbs.. 2 scubas...bugger all load loss....original fuel tank....HEAPS more range than standard petrol only. Emergency starting on LPG if run out of petrol (but wouldnt suggest it save for emergency).

    Cheers

PS. Mine was paid for within a year and I am way ahead after about 3.5 years.
