Not necessary, but if you're going to chip in on the upgrades then go the IC upgrade for sure...
Trans upgrade is really only necessary for towing...
Just use something like Penrite SIN ATF in the transmission.
I pranged front end of my '02 D2 auto last week and thought that it might be an opportunity to upgrade the intercooler and/or trans oil cooler while it is being repaired. It has been chipped, does not tow or carry heavy loads often, but is used in desert sand on the annual trip.
I searched through the threads here but there are conflicting opinions.
What does the forum recommend?

Without a doubt upgrade the ATF cooling system. I've been there, done that and spent lots of money. When you start loading it up, such as climbing, driving in sand or if you ever do tow, then the Chip and IC will easily smoke the tranny. You only need to smoke it once and the down hill spiral is set into motion as one problem then triggers the next and then the next before you have the tranny removed and rebuilt - an oil change(s) wont stop this process, it will need to be removed and properly rebuilt. The ZF's can be fickel.

Lets not forget Slunnie that your vehicle, when the trans was smoked probably had mroe to do with the fact that the cooler came out looking like a Clay Brick
I'm not saying dont add extra cooling, but more that they are pretty good when kept clean and running top quality fluids - In average use.
Its knowing if it is blocked that is an issue due to access to the core!
Thanks,
As I already have a Davis chip it looks like I should definitly upgrade the IC.
If I do start towing I should do the oil cooler.
