    New rear work light

Hey guys, just thought I'd share a current idea I'm putting together for a rear work/camp light for my D2. Hopefully have it all fitted this coming weekend so will update photos after install.

Decided I wanted a height adjustable rear light, with full 360 degree rotation, so it could be angled back into the rear of the Disco, as well as to a point immediately behind the vehicle, even with the door fully open.

I had a damaged yellow tripod type garage work light that I got from Bunnings in a sale a while back for less than $20. Took out the center telescopic "twist adjust" pole. New twin bulb exterior work light in a sale from SuperCheap for less than $40. Welded new light bracket to end of pole, making sure to leave hole in top to allow wires to run internally of pipe. Using flexi coiled wire to cope with height adjustment. Bolt light to bracket....

That's it so far! Going to fix to existing holes/bolts for factory rear wheel carrier, and wire it to be used with factory fitted 12v socket in cargo area. As its not envisaged to use that often, I'm not "hard wiring" it for now. Though that may change later!

As it stands, height ranges from 650mm to 1500mm, with full 360 degree rotation at top (thanks to twist lock adjustable pole), angular/horizontal light beam adjustment by bolt and bracket, and all wires safely protected by running them down the center of the tube. Pole should be amply strong enough being some 40mm dia for the bottom section.

More photos to follow during fitment over the weekend, but here's a taster....
    (any comments/concerns appreciated in advance!)

    Kieren,

Have you checked that you have enough room between your spare tyre and the door for 40mm dia tubing.

When I made mine, I only used 20mm square tubing, and there was not a lot of room there, and I've also spaced the spare wheel carrier out 6mm from the door (had to do that when I put the bigger tyres on).

    Cheers .........

    New rear work light

Hi mate. Yes, I have thought about that, and held the pole where I wish to mount it with the wiper going, and all appears to be good.
Soon find out for sure over the weekend.....but I do heed your warning!!
Might be a good thing I stuck with the narrower 235 rubber then.

    Many thanks.

Hi made mine with a aluminium paint roller extension handle goes up about two mtr's and does 360 deg. Used the coiled wire from an old flashing light with a cig lighter plug. Tuck the plug under the spare wheel cover when not in use and plug it into the aux battery ( in the back of mine).

When I get the time will figure out a way to wire it into the reverse lights but still be able to switch it on using the aux batt. This was previously fitted to my work ute and used many a dark morning.

    Finished install today.
Thanks to BST4X4XFAR for use of his garage and press drill.

My original thought was to us the wheel bracket bolts to attach the pole, but decided against it as I was concerned about getting correct strength(?) when the wheel was re-mounted.
So we decided to simply drill through the bracket plate itself, at an angle, therefore relieving the need to take the wheel bracket off at all.

So here's some pics of before and after fitment....

....and some addition pix showing the finished product.
Oodles of space for the wiper to move behind, and even enough room to get my wheel cover back on!!
Pic 1 is a bit dark, but hopefully you can see the wiper arm and blade well clear of the pole at it "worst" point.

Due to the nature of the pole mechanism, it allows the lamp on top be rotated a full 360 degs, and can be angle up and down via the lamp mount bracket.

Wiring is via the 12v socket in the cargo area, as when needed.
And the poles in a lovely AULRO yellow to boot.
Now just need to wait another 18 months for a "forum users" sticker run, as it's now obscured!!

    Cheers all,

    Looks good Kieren.

I like the way you've achieved both the telescopic extension and the ability to rotate the light. You've given me a couple of ideas on how I might modify mine.
    Cheers .........

Thought I might share my version of AussiAub’s light installation, with credit to Nealo who inspired me last year. The light has 92 LEDs providing great setup or night lighting and only draws 0.5A. See photos below.

Telescopic extension is a $7.50 squeegee handle from a hardware store with the squeegee removed and mount trimmed down; bracket is piece of 30mm aluminium equal angle I had lying around; coiled cable was about $5 from a electrical hardware, other cable from bits lying around.

I prefer not to drill holes in my Disco unless I can’t avoid it. So, the angle fits easily behind wheel mount using existing bolts (bit of a pain removing the rear door cover). The telescopic pole is bolted through its end swivel onto the bracket and then held in place by cable ties not too tightly pulled up, to allow the pole to swivel. The power cable shares the hole in the grommet for the rear window washer and I then threaded it down the flexible cable bundle into the right rear vent area next to the storage panier. In my case, I then ran the cable along the rear floor entrance under the cover strip to my power supply and a switch. For normal running around I have a water proof draw string cover (from a camping store) which goes over the light and top cable junction. Cheap, easy, light, robust enough, easily repaired.
