    Looked at some more - 1999 td5

    Hi All,

After being dissapointed with the first one I saw I went out looking at some others today. The best of which was a 1999 TD5, the down side was it had 248,000 on the clock. It did however have a full service history up to 210,000 but nothing after that so its missing about 40k. Both the interior and body work was very clean and tidy with only slight wear on the drivers side seat boulster and the fake leather gator on the handbreak was crumbling a flaking off, but on the whole great condition with no signs of extreme off roading underneath.

Now the 1996 one I looked at had a gear level for the high and low range and also for the diff lock (I guess you all know this but I am a newby), how does this one lock the diff's as the little gear lever only had high and low on it?

It did have a tow bar fitted and some typ of a gadget fitted in the cockpit that seemed to have some thing to do with it (but not sure what it did except light up every time I braked)

So its high milage and a lot of towing is this a combiantion I should be wary of on the TD5 or is it a solid engine and I shouldnt worry too much?

Anyway it was up for $10,999 which is right on the edge of what I can afford and doesn't leave much spare cash in case anything big breaks so I am hoping to get that down a bit closer to $9000

    What are your opinions?

    Regards
    PaulM

Do you now what sort of traviling it did?
While the milage seems high it's only 24,000 a year
We bought a car years ago and all the services done in Melb. and owner was in Geelong, 70Km each way + 3,000 for hollies added up.
A good service history is good as long as it shows the other items also.

Unfortunatly the D2's didn't come with a centre locking diff, relies on traction control.
Good news is a 99 should have the internals in the box(my'99 did) so just have to fit an actuator.
A search should find the different options people use.

The gadget may be a brake controler for a caravan so your guess might be right that it was used for pulling a van around.
This could acount for some off the higher milage too.

The TD5's are good motors as long as they don't get hot.
A search of what to look for will help too, asked quite often actually.

I don't know about the prices so I can't help there.

Oh, the 99 was the first of the D2's also.
Electronic most things and longer in the lugage area.
(Just to help for your comparisons).
    Cheers, Kyle

It did have a tow bar fitted and some typ of a gadget fitted in the cockpit that seemed to have some thing to do with it (but not sure what it did except light up every time I braked) trailer electric brake controller.

good service history= good motor, cant say the same about the diff's though, they are a bit weak. you would need to find out the details of its service history to see if the usuall things have been fix/replaced, ie plastic head dowls, has the head cracked/been repaired/replaced etc warped exhaust manifold? the turbo will be showing signs of wear at 248thou too, has it had its injector harness and or engine harness replaced due to oil contamination?

Anyway it was up for $10,999 which is right on the edge of what I can afford and doesn't leave much spare cash in case anything big breaks so I am hoping to get that down a bit closer to $9000
my advise would be not to go near any of the land rovers at smaller car yards, i went through 4 D2's before i got mine looking for a ''good'' one at a car yard, they just dont inspire me with confidance. i got mine privately through car sales, if you buy your LR from someone who lives LR then 9 times out of 10 you'll be sweet!

    What are your opinions?

    Phil,
On the D2's from 99MY-end02MY, None of them ever had the low range transfer box with the wording "Diff Lock" on it as there was no connection to the transfer box. It only ever had Hi-Low. From 03MY they re-introduced it.

I'm with Phil. I have had many french cars and am now into the Disco, I would avoid bying a second hand LR from a dealer. you want to be able to get an Idea of what the previous owner was like. If you can tell he is an enthusiast this speaks louder then a service history in my books he would have done more then what is required. Also a sh dealer has no idea what the disco has. an example of this is the number of them that list a base model on carpoint as an ES.

Also can I suggest you drive a 7 seater with air bags in the back (SLS) and Active cornering enhancement (ACE) IMHO they handle alot better and my kids don't get crook in the back. Yep you will need to replace the bags but they seem to last 10 years and if you buy them now from OS and keep them in the shed they arn't to expensive.

Enjoy your disco when you find it.

    Guys,

Once again, thank you for your input.

I have decided aginst this one, High milage plus worn seat and hand brake gator leads me to think its had a lot of stop start driving coupled with towing just doesn't inspire me with confidence.

And I really wanted the diff lock ability, ithout having to add bits.

    The search continues

    Regards
