My Freelander (same basic ABS system) also does it with the foot on the brake on start up.

I realised after reading this thread what the noise was, it happens a split second after the engine fires and if you have your foot on the brake you can feel the pedal pulsing as if the ABS is operating.

Think maybe something Land Rover added so as to cycle the modulator possibly to overcome 3 amego's not 100% sure about all of this yet but it might be worth investigating ???
    Nothing on mine('99).
This why I try to cycle the pump reguarly, can't hurt
    Cheers, Kyle

    Heres the "facts"

While the ignition is on, the diagnostics function of the SLABS ECU monitors the system for faults. In addition, the
return pump is tested by pulsing it briefly immediately after the engine starts provided vehicle speed exceeded 4.4
mph (7 km/h) during the previous ignition cycle.

Mine does it some starts & not others, you just get used to it & don't worry about it.....It's a LR thing....

On another point, does anyone watch the glow plug light & wait for it to go off before starting.I never have & have never had a prob.
SWMBO asked me the other day what the curly light is for,so she doesn't worry about it either & the D2 is her daily driver.

Living where you do in a hotter climate, the glow plugs are not "really" needed, but over here we def notice a diff in the cold winter.

On the flip side if the vehicle is already warm, no need to wait.......BUT a diesel will always start better on warm chambers.

i get the noise and the vibration through the pedal.

    always have.

never had a problem though and it is the 'shuttle valves' apparently.

its a LR... it wouldnt be one without at least 1 noise or leak :P

    i still love it

Yes. I wait for the light to go out each & every time. I also have the six beeps for the seat belt reminder and use that as a guide as well. Its for those people who may not find the 'curly' amber light, so I just say wait for the beeps to stop.

Feral I know, but thats just the way it goes.
