    Auto Trans Overhaul

    Hi all,

Looking for advice on carrying out an overhaul on the auto fitted to my wife’s 2000 Disco 2. She has complained for a while that the vehicle 'surges' between the 3-4 shift and that I need to get my sorry arse out and fix it (she is kind of good at motivational speaking)!

After taking it for a drive I confirmed that there appears to be some slippage when shifting to fourth. I checked the fluid level and gave it a filter change (or vice versa) and the old fluid was good and not burn't so I put it down to the 240 000 odd km it’s travelled, most of it with a chipped TD5.

So the question is how hard are these things to overhaul? I have done a couple of GM boxes before (trimatic and Turbo 350) so am no stranger to automatic transmission fluid and changing clutch packs, bushes and seals; or should I send the box and converter off to a specialist?

It looks like I would have to import parts from either the US or UK if I was to tackle the job myself as I cannot find a local supplier of an overhaul kit.

The 'kit' on a well UK transmission company websites identifies only clutch packs and a single bush, does anyone know if this is correct?

Would anyone recommend a place noting I am in Canberra, but am happy to consider sending the box north or south if necessary?

Sorry to ramble on but there appears to be a deficiency in the amount of knowledge to do with the ZF autos on this and other internet sources.

    Regards,

    Toad.

    Hi Toad,

I live in Canberra too, and have just had a special ZF4 HP22 with HP24 internals built and fitted by A&B Automotive Remanufacturing at Dandenong South. My gearbox was still working but was getting harsh at times after lots of heavy towing with a 4.6 litre V8 and 2.7 tonnes on the back. They also fitted a temperature gauge which showed that when working hard with the extra torque (407Nm) on long hills with the van, the standard cooler was not good enough, so they also fitted a massive transmission oil cooler which keeps the temperature below 100C even on long second gear slogs. It came with a 50,000 km warranty.

There are some costs involved in taking the car to Dandenong, waiting for it to be fitted, and getting it back for its first service at 1000 km, but if you like the car and want to keep it, it is money well spent IMHO.

They will build the box in advance to save on waiting time, and keep your old one on exchange. I can not recommend them highly enough.

I am currently at Tibooburra but will be home in a couple of weeks if you want to discuss it further, or PM me.

    Cheers,
    Terry

    Hi Pedro,

It was the figure given me when I bought it as a factory new RR HSE spare engine. I haven't had it on a dyno to prove it, but it certainly is nothing like the old 4.0 (just as well).

    Cheers,
    Terry
