    The special tool has a number on it,,
    so not just any old special lock nut remover will work,,,

    Any of the normal LR wreckers will have spare normal nuts, buy 5 and throw the locknuts away,,

    Get rid of the lock nuts and the tool. get std nuts instead. My "J" locknut adaptor started cracking and luckily I was on my driveway so clamped it together to undo the last nut. Then replaced all locknuts immediately.

    The warning signs were there that this can happen when you are fairly remote and have less capability to "improvise"

    As I had some 'dodgy' wheel nuts as well as the lock nuts that had been rounded and abused with poor fitting wheel braces etc, I was having difficulty getting them off (And on). I either had to hammer a socket onto the tin covered nut which then required some vice grips to get the nut out of the socket or wheel brace.

    I decided to take the plunge and remove the S/S cover off a wheel nut and see what was underneath. (Ignore the condition - it was a threaded wheel nut from a wrecker so I didn't worry about 'butchering' it to get the stainless steel cover off)

    Lo and behold - a perfectly good steel hex that is a more managable size of 26mm. The old damaged tin covered nut was a mis-match size between 28mm and 1-1/16" and I had some concerns with being stranded with a damaged tyre/rim out bush and not being able to remove 1 or 2 poor fitting wheel nuts.

    I acknowledge that a good condition wheel nut with the S/S cover in place will give you no removal problems.....but if they have been knocked around

    I also acknowledge the security issue with having no lock nuts.....but 26mm isn't a common wheel brace size so an opportunistic thief isn't going to be carrying a tool box with an assortment of tools with him!
