one nut on each wheel only the one with a dimple on it
I tried to change a wheel on my D2 recently.
It was my first go at changing D2 wheel so I read the handbook first.
As it instructed and in the correct manner, I used the OEM plastic tool to remove the nickle-plated wheel nut cover. The tool got stuck on and I eventually had to break it to get it off the wheel. The wheel nut cover stayed on and the wheel did too.
I still can't see how I can get these covers off without destroying them.
Someone suggested using two small flat bladed drivers, which I can imagine would work, but this doesn't clarify why the tool doesn't work as it should.
Call me a foolish optimist, but I've ordered another tool.
Has anybody else had this experience and what did you do?
Any real, first-hand experience will be highly valued.
Thanks.
one nut on each wheel only the one with a dimple on it
Hi Harris,
The covers on the wheel nut all stay on and fit neatly into the wheel brace except for the one as stated by Rod. Under this dimpled cap is the lock nut for which you should have a special tool that slots onto it and into the wheel brace. So the cap removal tool is only needed for this nuts cap only.
You might want to order 4 new wheel nuts as these lock nuts and a pain in the bum as the key tool that comes with the car will break if it hasn't already. If you break the key you will have an impossible time trying to get the lock nuts off short of drilling them out. As "Murphy" would have it the key will break at the most inopportune time and place. Not something to need. You may also have to get one for the spare as well as I think there is a lock nut on there also.
Another piece of advise is, don't get the 3 wheel nuts that hold the spare wheel to the rear door with the other wheel nuts as they are slightly longer in the thread and shank that the others. If you get them mixed up the spare wheel will rattle on the door. These 3 nuts, if the caps haven't been altered can generally be distinguished by the raised/reverse of the dimple that is on the lock nuts.
Hope this helps. If you need hand with anything just send me a private message (PM) on this site.

Harris,or is it Arris
Mate the tool is a joke. Also many owners put sillycum or worse to hold the shiny caps on.
As stated only the locker should have a dimple, but not always the case,Ive seen later D2s with 5 dimples per wheel.
I told Ian the 2 screwdriver trick, the smaller the flatblades are the better.
If you get really stuck, twist the locker nut with the wheelbrace to loosen it.Dont re-fit it unless you use sillycum if you do this as it wont stay where it should for very long.
Goodluck

After having it drummed all my life into me to read the instructions and follow them implicitly, I have now learnt that you can't really follow the instructions on anything to do with a D2.
In the epic effort to remove the wheel nuts using the exact methods as described in the owners' manual, I find, as my learned correspondents told me, I can just use the brace to get the dimpled, as well as the rest of the wheel nut covers off. They were quite correct. You can't beat experience. They came off in a jiffy. So what the hell is LR playing at?
Do these white-coated poofs (whose fathers I'm convinced were all paternal, didactic shop-stewards in the fifties and sixties) sit around the tea room trying to dream up diabollically stupid ways to annoy the people who were silly enough to buy their product?
"Hey, Mr Simpson, how hard can we make flushing a radiator."
"Well, m'boy by God we tried. We've nearly got it to the stage where it is impossible. The silly people will just have to buy a new car instead. It keeps us in a job you know," as he puffs on his pipe.
"Hey, Mr Simpson, I've got a good one."
"Well, do go on boy," (puffing on his pipe.)
"Well, Mr Simpson, um, I'm a bit shy but here goes: How about we put one dimpled wheel nut cover on one wheel nut of each wheel, and supply a special tool that takes them off, but, get this Mr Simpson, it doesn't ****ing-well work. It breaks off in their hands! Ha Ha.
And they jar their back badly trying to use it. And that's not all Mr Simpson! Even though we know they are cunning enough to read their manuals, we never tell them in the manual that the the original wheel brace will get all the wheel nut covers, including the dimpled ones off terribly easily! They'll feel like complete idiots Mr Simpson. We would have certainly shown them they can't mess with us."
"Well, son, you've done us proud. You'll go along way in the company."
Mr Simpson, in an aside to a senior colleague, "You know, that boy certainly has a nasty streak in him doesn't he? He's a quick learner isn't he..? A real company man if ever I saw one. Puff. Puff.
"But wait, Mr Simposon , there's more: Just as they back out of their driveway, the dimpled wheel nut cover falls off and tinkles, in a mocking sort of way, down the drive."
"Ah m'boy, you're really thinking like one of us now." Puff.
Hey, now your getting the hang of it.

I requested similar information on another post - "Why can't the 'tin' covers be removed from the wheel nuts and simply dispense with the locking nut, and then have good old steel wheel nuts??
Well, many agreed with me as many TD5 owners had difficulty with 'rounded-off' tin covered (It's actually stainless steel) nuts not fitting a wheel brace or a AF or Metric socket.
I've 'butchered' the s/s cover off a nut and......(Crescendo of heavenly music) lo and behold believers! There is a perfectly good steel hex wheel nut underneath that measures 26mm whereas the standard nut is 28mm (a very strange LR centric size). Steel nuts will last - s/s covered nuts will buckle, round-off and be a general pain in the a**. and could be hazardous out in the bush if you have a nut that won;t fit any of your tools....26mm is an easy fit
I have pics that I will post of the 2 nuts ....once I work out how to![]()

Today I set out to change the rear break pads on the rig and straight up noticed how ****ful* the 'special' lock nut was. It was close to being ****** after I had finished with the two rear wheels. I was happy though because I had changed the rear pads and hopefully eliminated the break squeal (although there was a truck load of meat on the pads). After a spin around the block the bloody break squeal was still there so I was pretty ****ed. Being at Saturday and about 10 am I decided to crack on with changing the front pads. (Small interval of taking the kids to swimming lessons and dropping tools back to the hardward and picking up the new pads). Back home and about to tackle the two front wheels and noticed the marvelous tool was almost but ******. Split up one side and rounded on all other points, ****ing great. Anyhow I pressed on and decided to try and undo both front wheels because the tools was at the point of no return. Needless to say some knuckle head decided to the knock back the extra vita weet that morning and the front wheel need a small army to remove of which the 'special' tool had not a ****ing chance.
**** you 'special' tool.
Folks, is there a place you can buy the 'special' tool on the cheap. (also some nuts)
Regards
Andrew
