Ever locked your keys in the D2 ?

So I'm travelling home from the Sunshine Coast with Dad, after a Honda Dealer Conference on Saturday. The weather there was superb.

It's 12.30AM sunday morning, we're at the Shell servo on the North side of Taree, we stopped for a quick coffee and a slash ... I'm slashing away up behind the hire trailers in the dark, dad can't open the back door to get at the fridge & thermos, I yelled out "Push the lock button on the dash UP !" ... he pushes the button, I hear the door locks work, he closes the door and goes to open the back door, but it still won't open ... WTF!!! ... Oohhh Nnooo .... silly bugger LOCKED THE DOORS , AND closed the only open door ... HIS .... my keys are in the ignition, radio's going ... and the spare key is in the camera bag on the BACK FLOOR ... it was strapped up under the chassis the day before, but I pulled it to check the fridge, and figured I didn't need to put it back ... it'll be OK, I won't loose my key ... lesson learned.

It's 12.30am, it's 5 degree's, we are freezing our nuts off, I'm wearing jeans and a light T-Shirt ... and all the keys are locked in the Disco ... how do you break into a D2a ? Dad didn't understand the seriousness of his stuff up ... he wanted to jam a bit of wire down the window seal, hook the latch and lift .... Sorry Dad! ... it's not 1956 anymore ...

It was about this time I could have used a stiff drink and a good cry

I was about ready to smash a window as we'd been standing around for an hour rather lost as to what we were going to do, when I remebered an AULRO post ... So after much searching around the back of the servo in the dark, I found a peice of scrap stainless sheet, about 300x300, and then sponged a plastic covered coat hanger and a torch from the very nice & sympathetic service station lass, we levered the window frame away from the B pillar with the stainless, and luckily the door had only closed to the first click, I was able, with the coat hanger straightened out, to reach the door button on the dash by sliding it in the gap we'd opened between the window frame & B pillar .... after an hour I still couldn't push the ****ing button !!!!! .... the coat hanger kept slipping off the button ... and I was only holding the coat hanger by the last 3/4" ... almost impossible to control the dam thing ... I'd even sharpened it to a point against the concrete wall ... no luck!

About this point in the proceedings I was considering plan B ... smash the bloody passengers window and let Dad freeze all the way home ... but he's 71 and I don't think he would have made it!

About 1/2hr later, the very nice & sympathetic service station lass's boyfriend turned up to take her home, riding a motorbike (fool, it's 5 degree's ffs!! ). He had a toolkit with him (the servo had no tools! ). With a borrowed pair of pliers, I was able to fashion a bump in the end of the coat hanger, which when pushed into the LH gap between the lock button and it's surround allowed me to twist the coat hanger with the pliers, and make the bump work like a cam on the button ... PRESTO ... we're in !! We're frozen, but we're in

Several cups of coffee later, with brass monkeys now departed, we headed off home .... heater on MAX

Note to self .... ALWAYS put spare emergency key back after use ... ALWAYS!!

    Here endeth ... the lesson.

Oh ... and btw ... if you lock the D2a AND the key isn't in the ignition turned to pos.1 ... the dashboard lock button is inoperative ... so you can't use the coathanger trick to break in!

I've often wondered how you'd get into a Disco if you locked the keys inside.

Have done it twice in a 120 series Prado - and they're childs play to get into, even for an inexperienced car burglar like me. But I don't even want to think about having to get into the Disco.

Where do you get hold of a fobless flat key ? I'm not keen on hiding the spare key with fob under the vehicle somewhere.
    Cheers .........

I got 2 cut at my local locksmith in Melb CBD for about $8 each. The key blank is an NE38 and can open, mobilise and drive the car as normal using the EKA. I hide one under the car and keep the other in my wallet and the EKA in my head touch wood!
    Cheers
