He's getting a little slow in his dotage.

Maybe I need to drag him along to one of my yoga classes to get some life back into the old bloke ?

    Oil ?

I just drain the old stuff out, put the drain plug back in, remove the old filter, fill the new filter, screw it on and re-fill the engine with fresh stuff.

    oil

I agree a diesel engine should have an oil designed for a diesel engine, I have used a CI-4 spec oil in our 300TDI since we bought it 10 years ago and have never had any problems. When we bought the TD5 i had a good look at which oils were recomended for the engine. Being a heavy commercial vehicle mechanic i find it hard to understand how people would use a petrol engine spec oil in their diesels as they have little or no detergents in them. I use the Penrite HPR5 diesel in the TD5 (would only use valvoline around the bottom of a fence post). The spinner on the TD5 is the best thing they could have put on the engine, they do an awesome job. Will be changing the oil at 10000km intervals.

Just some factoid to this oil thread - Toyota Australia is endorsing the Havoline Fully Synthetic C3 SAE 5W-30 oil for the 4.5 litre twin turbo diesel V8 in the 200 Series Land Cruiser.

The 200 Series Cruiser does not come fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter but it does have catalytic converters, so that's just like the latter TD5 engines.

My Oil dealer won't deal with Penrite anymore. He's been selling me Hi-Tec Fleetmaster Extreme 15W-40. A 20 Liter drum is $103.75.

I think the oil requirements for the TD5 centre more so around the higher lubrication demands of the unit injectors.

Yep, I'm guessing they place very high loads on the injector cam lobes, so you want a very robust oil with a good EP package as some TD5's have had lobe problems running passenger car synthetic oils.

I use a full synthetic oil made by Fuchs/Petronas for Iveco called Urania FE. 5-30 $68 per 5lt $265 per 20lt
Iveco use a unit injector setup on their 8,10 and 13ltr Cursor engines.
If you can get 80,000km per oil change in a euro3 engine and 150,000 in a euro5 engine with 20,000km oil samples. 10,000km in my Td5 should be a walk in the park.
I remember my dad told me 30 years ago " oil and filters are cheap compared to an engine"
    cheers

You can get some full syn 10W-40 ACEA E4/6/9 lubes for well under $200/20l retail.

I only pay around $165/20l for Penrite Enviro+ 10W-40 (previously Diesel SP) which also has various MB, Mack, Cummins, Renault and Volvo approvals (ie. been tested by the engine manufacturer)

There are plenty of other company blends around too.
