    Rocker Cover Gaskets 3.9 V8

The rocker cover gasket are leaking on my D2 3.9 V8.

Are the rubeer gaskets worth getting $30 each vs $8 each for cork?

Do I need to lift the manifold to change the gaskets?

    A D2 will be a 4.0, not a 3.9.

I have never replaced them on a Thor manifolded engine but I am guessing something might have to come off.

    Definitely fit rubber ones.

This is what mine looked like not very long after a "specialist" service!
Kieren's LandRover Discovery II: WA-AULROians are the best!!

Some of the WA-AULROians came and "gave me a hand" (roughly translated to "did it" ). From memory the top plenum(?) thingy had to come off as some of the bolts in the middle of the engine are un-accessible without doing so.

Mine was in such a bad state we spent an hour picking tiny bits of rubber out of the engine bores/oil ways!
Replaced with the OE rubber ones just to be safe.

Top job done though, and saved me a small fortune!

Sounds like a full days job for 1 person going slowly trying not to break something, might just give it a quick degrease this weekend then tackle it next Saturday.

It also needs a good bath.

    Thanks for the replys.

These have a habit of losing bolt tension so try nipping them up first. You'll need a 12pt 8mm socket.

I did think of nipping them up and saw the star points DOH. Those might get swapped for cap screws me thinks.

Nick some Philips head screws off an earlier V8, they fit the same!

    Just bringing this back.

Our D2 has a weep from both gaskets, and I think, as its due a service (100k) I will change them at the same time, along with leads and plugs etc.

When removing the inlet plenum are any other gaskets or seals dislodged that will require replacing?

    Thanks!

There is a tin gasket between the plenum and the lower manifold. Seeing it has "sprung" seals , it is probably a good idea to replace it.
AFAIK all D2s have rubber rocker cover gaskets. You could tell by looking at the little tag half way along.
If so , some sealant and a nip up will seal them up.
    Regards Philip A
